Does anyone know any good decent radar detectors that actually work real good that's less than a $100? Just something useful to detect 5o but i've herd some people have problems with door openers because of the frequency.
I dont really understand what those radar things do because don't cops have their radars on most of the time cause me and my friend drove by a cop and his thing didnt do anything...

Some cops keep their guns on - some turn them on for a second .....some use lazer and will get your speed in a fraction of a second and u are screwed. ..hehe.

actually, radar detectors are probably going to become even more useful because of the increase in speed and red light camaras that use radar to measure vehicle speed. i was just going to get an oil change when my detector went off while passing through a school zone and right down the bend was a van with a "safe speed" decal on the side that probably would have sent me a photo ticket if my detector hadn't warned me.
radar detectors have their limitations too. for instance one night i was on my way home to school and pretty much the only car on the road, suddenly my detector goes off, and i knew i was screwed. because since there wern't alot of cars on the road, the cop can turn off the gun and then just wait until your headlights appear to turn on the gun and get an instant read on your speed. so a radar detector won't help you avoid a speed trap in those kinds of situations.
also. whereever you see "speed monitors by aircraft", they don't use radar either. a cop in a plane times how long it takes you to get from one 1/4 mile mark to a second one, half way, and so on. but you can spot that by if you look at the road and you see the white stripes accross the road that have to be clearly visible from a plane. they are only there for one mile, so just slow down for 60 seconds and your clear.

depends what bands it picks up. I emailed that radar roy guy and actually got a reply with what bands they use in my area and some facts ..... I wasn't even expecting an email back.
i don't think that your small local town will have a fleet of speed enforcement planes, i think they are mostely state police. car and driver did a great article about it in ohio where they like 14 or 15 planes.
basically, the moral of the story is that they look more for bad driving habits rather than speed. they don't just hit the skys and say lets get everybody going over 70 or 80 etc. they can't even tell the difference between a miata and vw beetle. all they can tell are commercial (18-wheelers), vans, pick-ups and cars and a color. they can't tell if your plates are out of state, or if your bumper sticker disagrees with their opinion. the officer said that he pulls over more on your driving behavior. instead of pulling over the red pick up for going 68 in 55, he has the cop pull over the van tailgating him because that is more dangerous. if you change lanes like a maniac, or do something to call attention to yourself, then he will call you in to the ground unit to be pulled over.
he also said he can't call you in if your vehicle isn't distinguisible, like your a grey car in the middle of several other grey cars. as for driving when the road is nearly empty, he says they don't waste time patrolling roads when the traffic volume i low.
anyway, just keep an eye out and watch for the big white stripes perpendicular to the highway. that is where they patrol, and they are only watching you for that one mile stretch with a stop watch, so just slow down for one minute and after that they can't measure your speed from the sky.

Some lower end Bel branded radar detectors would be around the $100 mark. The upper end can reach $300 or so. What do you get on the higher end Bel models? sensitivity of course, being able to sniff out radar at a longer range is a good idea.
