I used one for a long time...any more I dont even mess with it.

I used a Whisler for about 4 years. It was a discontinued discounted model that the place had to dump due to it being illegal for some reason. There was supposedly new law forbiding some component in radar detectors and all had to be updated. So I got a good deal on an "illegal" legal device.

I recently upgraded to some Cobra in the $150 range and I have barely used it all. I even took the time to hardwire it to my sunroof and all.

Any more I am happy doing 7mph over the limit and at most I do is 10mph or so if passing. Most of the time the person doing 7mph will not be messed with.

Also, I always became paranoid when it would go off. Lots of false alarms happening..the thing was so sensitive it would pick up garage door openers...automatic doors at stores..etc. It made my driving more erradic. People claim the better ones dont give false alarms. I dont know because I would never spend that much on one. I got my $150 on a black friday sale for a good chunk off.

I live in Ohio, obviously, and I know about the flying cop brigade. My sister got a ticket from one of them for speeding. They even advertise on billboards and electronic signs that they are checking for speed and it is a "target enforcement area" most of the time. So it is not like you dont have a warning. I have never seen the lines completely accross the road. The only markings I have ever seen is a + in the middle of the road. Like it is one of the normal passing indicator lines with the same sized line segment perpendicular in the middle of it.

We even now have a seperate "motor carrier" cop I see frequently on Rt. 23 that only watches semi's and large trucks. Everytime I am traveling on this section of road there is always some semi pulled over by this unit.

Now what I really want is one of the new fangled digital CBs that you can pick up some police with and get the truckers..etc. I have been told numerous times over to get a CB instead if you want to avoid getting a ticket.

none of that stuff happens in NJ. There are no flying anything. Cops sit in their normal spots and bust sack like they normally do. State police are out there for nothing but to write tickets. I guess Ohio there are even more tucks on long rides and prob more drugs etc in those trucks.

i don't know exactely what they look like but they have to be big enough to be seen from a freakin plane several several thousand feet in the sky, if you can't see them in your car on the road...well i don't know what to tell you.

What I am saying is that there is no lines that dissect the road completely. Only the + shapes in the middle of the road that are quite large in my neck of Ohio.

..and yes Ohio 23 is a huge drug running highway. It goes all the way north and south through the state. It is a straight run form Kentucky to Michigan. A lot of drug runners from Florida get busted on 23 for peddling drugs along here.

The "flying brigade" is called VASCAR. You can wikipedia it. It's an old technology from the 60's.

And a Cobra that gave many false alarms? I'm not surprised, Cobra is known for that. I had one before, and had many false alarms and when there was cop radar, it ignored it until i was right on top the cop. At least I was doing the speed limit! Needless to say I got rid of Cobra.

cops aren't always using radar detectors. they only use them when running a speed trap. they aren't just driving around town with them on because they can't accurately gauge vehicle speeds while moving. they have to be stationary to properly calculate you speed.

actually, radar detectors are probably going to become even more useful because of the increase in speed and red light camaras that use radar to measure vehicle speed. i was just going to get an oil change when my detector went off while passing through a school zone and right down the bend was a van with a "safe speed" decal on the side that probably would have sent me a photo ticket if my detector hadn't warned me.

radar detectors have their limitations too. for instance one night i was on my way home to school and pretty much the only car on the road, suddenly my detector goes off, and i knew i was screwed. because since there wern't alot of cars on the road, the cop can turn off the gun and then just wait until your headlights appear to turn on the gun and get an instant read on your speed. so a radar detector won't help you avoid a speed trap in those kinds of situations.

also. whereever you see "speed monitors by aircraft", they don't use radar either. a cop in a plane times how long it takes you to get from one 1/4 mile mark to a second one, half way, and so on. but you can spot that by if you look at the road and you see the white stripes accross the road that have to be clearly visible from a plane. they are only there for one mile, so just slow down for 60 seconds and your clear.
cops can gun you on the move, their radars are hooked into their speedometer and its just an equation. i learned it in physics. and also they cannot be perpendicular to you car to gun you. then have to be on an angle to get a reading.

Yes cobra was quite popular, but with as many falses as I received and a failure to pick up genuine police radar, I can see why it's not so popular anymore.
