OT now...I am currently running a set of Dayton RS180s in the doors, was running cd1pro HLCD under the dash, got rid of that to get Dayton RS28A large format tweeters. All running active off of a zapco 1000.4
The tweeters will come in tomorrow. If you feel like doing some research, go for it and build yourself an active set by buying "off-brand" (IE. Seas, peerless, vifa, etc.) components that will sound 100x better than hype-r or infinity.

I've never heard Dayton speakers...let us know how you like them. I have one of their subs and it's pretty good

To the OP - get away from Infinity and Alpine. Don't get stuck on mainstream. You will absolutely want an amp. If $120 is what you can afford for speakers right now, save up more money and wait til later. You'll be much happier you did. Frankly, those Infinity speakers are crap.

Why? Seems like a downgrade to me, but guess you'll have to compare and decide for yourself.

I think he's sticking to Infinity and Alpine because he can get them locally at BB/CC instead of having to order them.

Good plan. BB and CC suck as far as audio goes for the most part. I work at Circuit City, but thankfully not in the car audio department. I'd drive everyone away from the store cuz I wouldn't recommend a damn thing from CC.

O then definitely look into some higher grade equipment. Elemental Designs is overhauling their product lines, some brand new component series' coming out soon. They have them posted up but no specs yet. Also check out CDT Audio, heard nothing but good.

OT again! But yeah it is a little downgrade, the HLCD was just getting in the way to to much. If I had a bigger car I would be all about it. So I got the tweeters in yesterday, I crossed them at 2k @24db, they seem to like it, no sound of breaking up or fatigue. I am just a little scared to turn it up to much, I don't want to kill it.

So far it has a significant less output than the HLCD obviously! But now I am sacrificing efficiency for compact... Oh well

Great choice on the XO point & slope for the new combo, I think that'll be optimal, as I'm familiar with both those mids & tweets.

I hear ya on the space...no idea how I'm going to get both HLCDs and mids in the kicks, but I've got to try! Almost makes me wish I had an auto trans...bleh.

The only thing with the dayton rs28a is that it is large format, its going to be fun trying to mount them on the kicks. I will try to make some mounting cups from PVC pipes and then mount them to the kicks itself.

I am still wondering if I should get a set of CDT upstage tweeters and mount them higher and have them play higher, like above 12k. If I do that I would need to get another amp.

What I would like to try is to glass 2 6 1/2" Tang Band midbass in the door, you know where the pocket in the door is, I dont know if it is possible, but close that area up and make it a sealed enclosure with 2 woofers.
Oh here are the tang band:

But yeah I am going to miss the loudness of the CD1s. It didn't even need all that much EQing like everyone says.

If SQ is the goal, you're likely better off without them. Once you get the main sats done, you can experiment with any tweets you might have, in order to see if they and their placement improves or detracts from your SQ. Just use a cap for whatever 1st order HPF freq. you want, no worries when you're x-ing over at ~12kHz. Then if you do decide to buy the CDT kit, I still don't think it'd warrant the purchase of an additional amp. I'd run them in parallel with the Dayton's, just using a cap and if needed, an L-pad or attenuator. One reason I suggest this is because when mids & tweets can't be located next to each other (or in this scenario with multiple drivers), it's often best to use a 1st order (6dB/Oct.) slope.

That'd be nice (albeit a lot of work), provided they were crossed over fairly low, to a midrange in the kicks. Anything over ~200Hz or so from the doors begins to degrade the soundstage, imo.

That new model looks promising, but I'll wait to see what others think before I seriously consider it.

For me it's not the SPL or efficiency of horns, but the sound itself. they're just so much more immediate/fast, and sound more "lifelike" to me, like when you go to a concert. Not surprising really, since most performances utilize the same type of drivers, even if the horns themselves are a bit different. As for the EQ, I tend to agree with you, not too much is needed for them to sound great when listening, it's just when measuring with an RTA that tuning can be a bit involved, if seeking a flat response. BTW, CA&E did a comparison on several brands of HLCDs many years ago and found the IDs required less EQ than the competition to get good SQ.
