Default Hey, a JDM stereo. No, really. A JDM stereo. (56k no)

I'm all about doing stuff that 1. looks stock and 2. looks entirely different; my Scion is undergoing all of its interior mods at this moment before I move to suspension. Instead of buying a US-market head unit, I imported one from Osaka. This is an Eclipse E3306 from Japan; it is not sold in the US and requires an FM frequency converter to bring in our FM bandwidth.

Thanks to some creative installation + forward thinking on my part, I have maintained steering controls and AUX input, so the unit functions like stock. I've also gained an in-dash MiniDisc player, although I haven't any idea what I'm using it for.

Sorry about these next photos - the face is really glossy so the camera was focusing on my reflection regardless of what I tried to get it to focus on:

all photos from flickr

I also threw a quick / blurry video up on Youtube; the camera was still uncooperative. The stock speakers sound distorted at the end, but the sound was clean. I had to force some weird settings to get them to sound cleaner (fade front 60% , mess with some loudness settings, etc; I may even have the phase inverted going out to them right now)

(Note that the video may not be up immediately - I just put it up and it takes a bit to process.)

For those that care for some reason, the songs I was playing were:

Marlon ft. Rex Dog - One Foot Skank
Dave Armstrong & Redroche - Back to Love (in the video)

That said, does anyone want to buy an '07 stock HU?

About $500 for the unit alone, not including the dash kit, PAC SWI-X, or Eclipse remote to program the SWI-X off of (I didn't buy one; the store used one of their stock ones to program the unit.) I could've gotten something else with a lot more features than this (think of this as a lower-midgrade unit, I'd say,) but it's neither as cool nor as exclusive. It's probably pretty safe to say that I'm the first person to have one of these in a Scion tC.

The only real risk I took was steering controls, which had to work. If I couldn't get steering to work, it was over and I was going to sell the unit. Thankfully, the JDM units use the same IR protocols that the USDM ones do; I found a Japanese-market remote online for 3000 ¥ if I couldn't use a US one. (It doesn't come with a remote from the factory.)

Also, I bet you can see why I wanted light filters for my white LED gauges. The centre console ones are going red with a white HVAC LCD. Now that I have a clock on the HU I also can display the outside temp 24x7 on the HVAC, relegating HVAC controls solely to the use of temperature.

Ha! It's really funny, because the only place any kana are used are in this one spot in the configuration interface. Everything else is in English from the factory.

Glad everyone here likes it. This is just step one in my quest to make the most stock-looking modified Scion ever. I'm going to build something I think the RS should be.

I like these nice Double din units, but why did you choose this radio. What features made you get it.

Interesting that ebay lists it as a new model. Its been around for about 3-4 years easily. The funny thing is, theres really no point in MD and MP3. MD is a good format but the media/recorder support sucks, so its basically useless unless you are a MD freak from the 90's.

I always look at the JDM double din units. They are always better then the US double dins. Anyway I just wanted to say nice HU and good choice. For anyone who doesn't want to go ebay for the JDM headunits check out www.Audiocubes.com They have lotsa great stuff not just headunits and it's pretty much all JDM. Pricing is a little over the top but resonable for new JDM stuff. Once again looks really nice.

I think I saw a Skynard mini disk propping up the toilet seat at a salvage yard.
I'll check to see if it's still there.

You might be able to get some mini disks on ebay, but I hope you like 90s rock.

That's Fujitsu's press release. February 09 2006. It's not been around that long; there was an E3305 before this.

MD really isn't that awful except on the SQ end, but the speakers in that car have trouble reproducing any sound decently at all, so it doesn't matter so much.

And yeah, I definitely didn't get this off of eBay.
