i have a stock 05 sound system and want to upgrade with a new headunit. But what HU? i really like the look and ipod integration of the 08 premium and i can find them cheap on ebay but is that the way 2 go for the best deal? becuase i read they only have 160watts of power.

 

Check out crutchfield.com or your local audio shops. Alpine, Pioneer, Kenwood, Eclipse are some good brands to look into.

 

Don't buy a HU on it's power rating, they're all inflated numbers, if there's enough power for you from one HU's internal power, then you'll likely be pleased with any one of them. If you want decent power and SQ, then don't use HU power, run external amps.

the 08 premium would give you RCA pre-outs if you ever want to install amps, so technically YES the premium can sound better

 

If you just replace the HU, nothing more, then you likely wouldn't notice any difference in SQ, certainly not enough to go through the time, effort & cost of swapping them out.

 

do you mean just moving to the 08 premium from the stock 05? are you saying that there isn't an SQ difference between the two?

changing the head unit from the stock scion deck to anything decent will get you more SQ for the buck than any other mod. that's why any audio mod project should start with either the HU or a subwoofer/amp.
