HVAC - LED Swap Issues - HELP!
So back in the day IceNine did my LED swap on my HVAC. For some reason the Mode and front windshield defrost lights dropped out completely. He's an awesome guy and drove 50 miles just to come fix it... but after a while it dropped out again. Not sure if its a faulty wire or an issue with the cold solder joint.
Anyway, recently my cubby light (that he switched to blue) and my HVAC have been dropping out completely. It's wierd because they flicker sometimes. Also if I turn my headlights off the clock does light up, but it turns off when I turn my lights on. At one point it even would light back up if I gave the dash a good knock.
I'm assuming its just a loose connection somewhere, but I don't have a soldering iron and haven't worked on a circuit in 9 years. IceNine I know is busy with his family and job and hasn't gotten back to me for a few months...
Is there anyone in the Jersey / Philly / NY area that can help me out? I'll drive to you. I have an 07 TC.
I'd appreciate anyone's help. It's pretty irritating trying to turn up the heat in the car in complete darkness.
I'll even pay someone for their time... so I'm not asking for any freebies.
Thanks.

Is it an 07? If so, there is a good chance that your lights going out when the headlights are on are part of the known issue with the 07 HVACs. However, the rest of your issues are not due to that from what I can tell. I would really need to see the board to troubleshoot any further. If you can live without it for a few days, you can ship it to me. If I dont find the issue, I wont charge you for anything but the shipping. If I do find the issue, I will let you know a cost to fix before moving forward. My email is engifineer@gmail.com
Do you have other lighting tapped into the dimmer circuit such as an aftermarket radio?
Did they use t-taps?
Does the cubby light & hvac flicker at the same time?
Other than that, sounds like the common 2007 hvac issue.

Engifineer - It is an 07. I don't mind living without it for a few days... I'm actually going away for a week or so from th 30th of december to th 4th... so if you aren't too busy during that time period that would be great.
Garage1217 - Don't think I have anything else wired to it. I do have footwell lighting but he wired it to a switch. They did use t-taps from what I remember. The cubby light and hvac do not flicker at the same time. Cubby used to flicker and go out a little while before the HVAC started doing it.
Anyone around here that might be able to help me? Otherwise I guess Engifineer I'll be sending it to you.
What's the common 2007 hvac issue? Is there a simple fix that I can try?

Sounds like the 07 issue. Send it into Dave, you will be in good hands. If he is busy when you want to send it, I have the same policy on repairs.
I can also source you an 08 hvac which does not have the documented issue, perform the swap for you and send it as a direct replacement. And I can give a small credit back for the 07 hvac if that is the issue.

Read the thread for the HVAC issue. Sucks. I called my dealer to see if they would swap it out for me even with my LED swap. I doubt they will but figured no harm in trying. Garage1217 how much would you charge for what you suggested - the 08 HVAC with the LED swap? What cost am I looking at?
My basic led swaps run $69.99 shipped back priority mail which include all leds and the power IC / resistor kit install.
As for a price on the hvac, you pay just the actual price of what I pay when I find one. Can take a week or two sometimes to find the right unit. Prices usually are around $60-$100.
There is a non-dimmable modification so that it stays lit all the time which is easy to do so your stock unit could be repaired, I am working on a mod that works with the stock dimmer but I have not had time to fiddle with it in quite awhile.

Thanks Garage! I'm waiting to hear from Engifineer to see what kinda cost he estimates if that's the problem. See if swapping it out might just be better and cheaper
I'll let you know when he gets back to me.
Thanks a lot for getting back to me so fast and all the help. I'm also trying a complete shot in the dark in getting my dealership to replace it. At least then all I have to pay for is the LED swap. But I doubt they will... though they've surprised me sometimes.

hmm.. well... i'm not sure engifineer has ever gotten a failed '07 unit before..
if you're able to send it to him.. he might be able to troubleshoot and actually figure out the cause of failure.
at which then would greatly help all of us swappers out.
