Default Kenwood DNX8120 installed *pics*

Well I have had this unit for a few days but I allready love it.
You might say love is to stong of a word....your wrong.

When you buy a Double din you usually get subpar EQ, no time alignmet, really no good sound control.

This unit has a 13band EQ control for the front and 13 bands for the rear.
Thats where it starts. You have time alignment, You can choose what size speakers you have . 6/12/24 db crossovers for EACH speaker. You can also choose the level of output from each speaker.

I have had the Pioneer D3, Eclipse 5510 and the Panasonic Strada. This is way beyond those.

The nav is Garmin so its very well laid out. I figured out most of the functions in about 20 min. You can change the voice of the nav. It has text to speech and will say all the names of the streets. The Pioneer,Eclipse, and Panasonic said some names but not all. I live in a very rural town and even those streets are said. The POIs are great.

The price is a bit high but if you want a sweet double din with great nav, its worth it.

If anyone wants a specific shot, feel free to ask

I am going to be purchasing this unit this week. How was the install? Any pics? How long did it take? Is there anything specail that you need other than the unit for the install? Where did you put the gps antenna? How is the fitment in the (will the door still close)? Sorry for all of the questions but I am really excited about this purchase.

install in tcs are EASY, even easier than a 88-98 chevy (if you have ever done one)

no pics of the install,if you search for the HUGE thread about the D3 install that someone did,its the same thing

Nothing special just the side mounting brackets, which are about $10 and easy to put on also. If youhave an ipod the cable is another $30 and thats easy also.

The door will close if you follow the instructions in the D3 install thread. The bluetooth antenna kinda sticks out, but no problems closing the door.

I bought it for $800 on ebay, its a refurb but no problems and I got the square trade warranty for really cheap(had some coupons and you save 10% for signing up)

The bluetooth works fine, ive made about 5 calls with it and it works fine

did you upgrade your maps?

The newest maps are version 2.4

you can get em at

I was very close to getting Kenwood.... they say they have HD, and even had a part number... but no one has ever seen it, so I passed and went to Alpine

Nice! I have the DNX7100 and was trying to setup staging with my eD6000v2s, having time alignment would have been better. Word of caution, don't try to install hacked garmin maps on the Kenwoods. I jacked up my GPS so now it has to go through initial setup everytime I start the car. Good thing I don't use GPS that much. Should have just paid $70 for the maps on SD.

Did they finally change it to support Divx from the USB drive? That would prob push me to upgrade if it did.

tckid - try selecting the passenger side speaker for the speakerphone instead of driver's side as well as turning down the speakerphone volume. GF complained about echoing until I made the speaker change.

did you get a SD card? ( by holding down the eject, it goes lower and reveals the sd slot)

i didn't get a SD card, so to upgrade the maps version, i buy my own sd card and then what? the file is an .exe so drag that into the sd card or install it first?

download the file

extract the file on your computer

put sd card in your computer

make a folder titled "garmin"

drop the extracted file into the garmin folder

put the sd card in , the unit will do the rest,
it takes a bit to read the sd card

takes maybe 5 min

the garmin firmware update usually involves downloading a file onto your computer then unzipping or copying the files onto your SD card. When the system boots it will look on the SD card for the update.
Just for clarification the update to is not for the map data, just for the device firmware/software.
