im completely new to the entire audio world. I jsut figured it out, i can get the type r for 115, apline mrp m450 for 120, go to best buy and get box and wiring for 100, have them install it for about 60 with a lifetime warranty.
If I were you I would just pay the 650 and just get it done. Your new to the audio world so don't try and go do it yourself, a lot can go wrong... trust me. now 650 isn't a great price but at the same time if the shop your going to is a legit shop, then your getting a fair price.

well the thing is, i can buy the sub and amp on my own for way cheaper than the store has it, but buy their box and wiring, then have them install it and it will still have a lifetime warranty

the only thing that comes to mind near the vicinity of the type R is maybe a W6, and that is more than twice the price that I got my type Rs for!
most likely you heard a faulty install, or an incompetent shop. Dollar for dollar, I havent heard anything to compare in the price range, granted type Rs are a bit power hungry
Between a 12" Hype-R costing $199..
I'd rather get a 12" FI SSD which cost $189. Build quality is better, sound better, handles whatever power you throw at it, if you blow it, fixing it is a simple re-cone away, oh yeah customer service.....

I dont presume to say that you are too experienced at audio for several reasons
1) the type Rs handle 500W RMS and some have recorded to throw much more at them individually. I dont know of many woofers in the range again that can handle that much power
2) I dont know why you would want a woofer to handle "any power you throw at it". possibly your confused that power ratings = SPL or db ratings which is NOT TRUE.
3) I would never recommend reconing a woofer for many obvious reasons. But I do remember a friend that had his version 1 W3 reconed back in the day, and it was about $100. I would have just coughed up the money for a brand new woofer
