Default Locking center console / keeping the iPod safe

I'm really getting tired of having to unplug my iPod, put it in the glove box, and lock the glove box every time I leave my car only to undo that process every time I get back in. Besides, the glove box doesn't seem particularly sturdy. I'm pretty sure you could bust that open with a screwdriver and a good knock on it. Has anyone rigged up a way to lock their center console, or do they have another way of keeping their iPod secure? A lockbox inside the center console that's bolted into place? Please do tell. My iPod is too expensive to do anything other than keep it very, very safe. Thanks in advance.

you should be more worried about other things if you're thinking about your ipod being unsafe when it's inside the center armrest....

such as... how expensive is that window that they're going to have to smash to get it.. or the fact is when they do smash that window.. how long they're gonna take to search your car...

cause given enough time.. it won't stop a thief from getting what they want... even if it's the entire car.

Man. . . if you really want to be **** about it. . .

odds are, you probably never pull out your ipod (or wouldn't want to). It will charge itself, and you can browse the menu's with the headunit. So if you want theft protection, just stuff a bunch of razor wire into the center console. The theif will love that. Usually, I zip tie razors under my dash, but I havn't had a chance to do that with the tC.

Insurance will pay for my window if it gets broken. It will not pay for my iPod. :-\ I can't take the iPod with me all the time, unfortunately. And razors...not so much.

Cars get broken into at my job on a semi-regular basis. I fear for my car's life parked at my apartment complex at night. And when I'm in class, someone could have their way with my tC while I'm out of the picture for a couple hours. And that's no fun.

I've been thinking that with a slot cut into the center console, I could slide a 1/4" thick metal plate in from the back and have a way to lock it in place...that would be very difficult to get into without a key. Problem is, it appears that the center console is one massive peice of plastic. And I would definitely want a center console other than the one currently in my car to cut into. Even if I find someone with a wrecked tC on the forums who would sell their console to me, shipping would be prohibitive.

It sucks being paranoid. :-\ Maybe I could just drop a lockbox in the console, drill a hole for the cable, and bolt the sucker down. Leave the iPod in there...hmm...

I did on my xA, my Lexus, and my Corolla. . . I just havn't had a chance to do it on the tC. It's not hard really, just find nice little edges in the plastic and either drill holes and use zip ties, or glue em on. Also zip tie them to wire harnesses.

The only thing is, you have to count how many you place, and write it down. You definitely want to remove 'em before going into any kind of service, unless you want a law suit filed against you.

What's the chances your ipod will get stolen?

Around where I live, I'd say 1 time in 20 years.

So suppose where you live you determine you are at risk and you estimate your ipod could get stolen once every 2 years.

Value of iPod = $240

$240/24 months = $10.00 per month

So in any given month in those 2 years, your at risk for losing $10

I propose you:

1) adjust the numbers according to your situation - this includes adjusting the cost of your iPod, and also adjusting the likeliness of it getting stolen

2) pay money monthly into a jar

3) when and if that ipod get stolen, you have money set aside in the jar to replace it

4) of course, you can reduce the likeliness of the ipod getting stolen by not drawing attention to yourself when you park

5) you don't have to physically put money into a jar, but rather put it into secure investments

6) worry less = be happier = live longer

a friend of mine told me that his neighbor screwed razors to his sub box in his camaro about 5 years ago. he came out one morning to his car, found his back window smashed and blood everywhere. then he saw his sub box in the grass with more blood. at least he still had his speaker. LOL

Honestly, that center console is not any more secure than the glove box. If someone really wants your stuff, they can get it...especially if you leave it unattended...I think you shouldn't be so paranoid and just let it be....if it gets stolen, then it's stolen....the only other thing I can tell you to do would be to relocate the ipod connection to somewhere inside the dashboard and make a special compartment for your ipod that no one would think to look for.

Build a false floor to go above your iPod and outlets. People that don't know tCs will never know to look underneath.

Bingo!

Plus honestly, no one is going to know youhave one in the car unless you leave it out in the open. The chances a thief is going to break into a car that he or she can see nothing that they want is slim. Most thieves see it, break in, and run. keep everything hidden and don't give any wandring eyes a reason.

I did have a false floor. It was well designed, but it didn't work out so well due to the design of the top of the center console. Oh well, I'll probably just lock it in my glove box when I'm at work and try to take it with me all other times. And it's not $240, it's $340. 80GB. So you can understand how I would be more than a little upset if that got stolen.

How was it well designed if it didn't work??? I've seen a few that look and work quite nicely. I wouldn't bother locking it in the glove box. They'll pop that open with the same screwdriver they used to pop the window. 20 seconds and they're gone. But hidden under a factory looking false floor, they won't even know it's there.
