Default Looking for a new Headunit. VERY CONFUSED

So I'm looking for a new HU. Right now I have the OEM 07 Pioneer HU with RCAs going to my amp which are powering my Alpine Type-s components.

I don't really know much about audio. My brother hooked everything up (Alpine components + amp + install) for all about 200 dollars. He told me that my HU is now what is lacking in my setup (and a sub too if I'm looking for deeper/fuller sound).

I would like to keep my IPOD connection with the ability to use my steering controls with the new HU. I just don't know what to look for? I wont be able to afford a double din with NAV so Im settling with just a regular reciever..or maybe a double din receiver if its not too bad in price.

My price range is around 150ish for a HU. Is that going to be enough to get me a decent one? Im not really looking for premium sound or anything. Just something with good sound.

Woud should I look for in a HU?
___________

Im also looking for a sub perhaps. I dont really want to buy a new AMP, so would I be able to bridge my amp to power the sub? If so, what would be a good enough sub I can buy? I would be making a box like elemental design's.

If not, would you guys recommend me getting a self powered sub? If so, which ones?

THANKS!

ipod cant be done through the existing connection but can be done. steering wheel controls are easy to keep to (costs another $50 for a pac swi). the new alpine units are really nice, eclipse has always made nice units, and the pioneer premiers are generally very good as well.

i got a real nice deck for sale for $200 shipped. pioneer 7800mp. it has all you will probably ever need. you can get an ipod adapter, and use the pac interface with it to keep your steering wheel controls

Many Scion owners that I know are very pleased with the Eclipse line of head units. The previous generation of Eclipse head units are closing out and are going for very cheap.

The beauty of Ecplise is that it's made by Fujistu Ten, a Toyora affiliate and works with the steering wheel controls without the need for an adapting kit. The sound quality coming from Eclipse head units are clean as well.

Word. If I remember correctly, its mainly the double DIN's/navs that use the standard toyota harness.

Single DIN size, not so much....

The CD3000, CD5000 and CD7100 have been confirmed to have compatible steering wheel control plugs. The AVN5510 is also compativle without adapter. Sheesh, how many more Eclipse products in the $150 range do you need?

This is the one I got my gf for Xmas...

Alpine CDA-9884

It includes the iPod cable. You would only need the Pac device. Plenty of inputs for a sub, component speakers, satellite, etc.
The only bad part is the illumination; it's red with blue buttons. (Or, you can make it all red.)
For the $$$, this HU rocks!
