Ok, I have an '06 tC with the factory ipod upgrade. I replaced the components all the way around (except the tweeters) with Kenwood and Alpine speakers. They weren't the most expensive ones they had, but they weren't the skimp ones either. Sorry I really don't remember which models they are. I've also got an Alpine 4ch amp and a small Alpine 10" sub. The amp is powering the rear speakers and the sub.

Ok, here's my problem. Right now, I have no midrange at all. I can hear the sub hitting very clearly and I can hear the high stuff very well, but the midrange things are muffled and elusive. I didn't upgrade the HU so I'm thinking that's the culprit.

I need suggestions on the HU. I'm not looking for video or nav, but I would like to continue to use my ipod and would like to have steering wheel controls still. Other than that, I'm game. I'm not a real audio nut, but I would like it to sound good. Looking for something $300 or less + install. Thoughts?

Edit: The main reason I suspect the HU is because I used to have a set up in my old car with a 1000w sub + 1000w 4ch amp, and an upgraded HU with only basic pioneer components all the way around and it sounded much much more clear than the current setup. Just thought I should clarify.

 

Well, I was going to suggest the Avic d3 or z1 by pioneer, but those have nav, dvd, etc...

If you just want something ordinary for pretty cheap, I would personally look at some pioneer premier units. For me, those have worked the best and have had the best overall layout. Alpine and Eclipse make great HU's and have some great sound quality, but for CD reading quality, layout, etc. they are lacking. Thier designs have not changed in years...

Pioneer is coming out with great HU. I would not go with speakers or amps from them. But the HU's are awesome. Check out some websites like crutchfield and ebay. You will be able to get some good deals.

If you don't decide to go with Pioneer, then Kenwood and JVC are pretty good too.

Pioneer DEH-7800MP, they can be had on ebay for a real nice price. i've had mine for a couple months now and i love it.

 

I agree on the Pioneer HU's. Even though I have the Eclipse AVN6600 and would recommend it to everyone, my old Pioneer deck in the tC was very nice.

I have a DEH-P6800MP in my car right now that will be for sale very shortly,
I ordered an AVIC D-3 from Crutchfield and it will be here on Weds. 7/18/2007.
The DEH-P6800MP is like new, it's iPOD ready. I will include the dash install kit and harness, instructions and original box, all complete. I paid $260 for it here at a local audio shop. It has an assortment of audio settings and features as well as EQ displays, backgrounds and screensavers, I dialed in my system to sound awsome, by far one of the best systems I've ever heard. uhh. why do u have the amp on the rear speakers? u will get better sound if u put the amp on the front ones and the sub and just connect the rears to the HU. i suggest u do that when u replace the HU. just a suggestion.

 

Get an Alpine or Eclipse. Your stock head unit is a pioneer. That should tell you everything...

 

That tells you nothing other than it's stock. You get what you pay for. Are you giong to tell me that my pioneer Z1 has the same sound quality as the stock pioneer HU? Dee-dee-dee.

 

alpine used to be good, now they are crap. pioneer is way better than any alpine deck that has come out in the last couple years. back when alpine had the v-drive decks with the 5 band pararmetric EQ's they were awesome though. so if you can find one of those used go for it.
