Default My subwoofer box creation

I wish that JLaudio deemed the tC "stealth box worthy", but since this car is geared for the younger audience who normally is not trying to hide what they have, I took it upon myself to make one.

I am using the tub that sits to the passenger side of the spare tire. I have so far coated the outside of the tub with metal tape, and then about 5 coats of cloth and fiberglass resin. Since this is going to be the mold for the box, and I am going to then coat the inside of this box with metal tape and make a true size tub out of fiberglass, the mold itself needs to be about 1/4" or more so that it does not loose shape as I heat it up once again when making the actual tub inside of it.

The tub I have calculated to give me about .8-.9 cubic feet of airspace if I sealed it off at the top. However, the sub I intend to use, a JL 10w3v2-d2, needs about .7 sealed, so that gives me the advantage of flushing the amplifier into the top of the tub to keep everything all the stealth-like. I will be using a 250/1 and it will fit flush perfectly.

Now the trick is to keep the woofer from being obstructed from the two layers of carpet and card board material as well as the amps heat sinks to constantly have fresh air available. This is where less than complete stealth fun has to happen. I have to cut through both layers of fabric and my preference is to have the same style stitch around the cuts that are currently on the outside perimeter of the two layers. I have gone to a couple car upholstery places with no luck. They can not do the stitch because it is made with a surge machine which makes, you guessed it, a surge stich. Both upholstery shops then reccomended I find a rug shop, as most rug manufacturers use a surge machine to stich rugs. This is the last part of my homework that I need to accomplish.

So as I stand I am 2-3 coats of glass away from the mold being finished for the tub, and have made it my mission today to find a rug dealor who can provide me the necessary services I stated above. I will keep you all informed as to my progress with this and will hopefully have pics up soon. I am also planning on making this mold with the ability to make these tubs over and over again, and once completed, will offer up a price to you all and others to make the tub again.

all for now, questions and comments por favor

there isn't much to see right now, other than that tub covered in glass, but once I complete the outer mold I will post it up.

well, what are you wanting to see, given my current progress?

do you know what fiberglass resin on cloth looks like?

do you know what the tub next to your spare looks like?

It might be worthless to you right now, but not necessarily to someone else. Maybe others will jump on the idea and do it themself by my description.

And if not, then have some patience and leave this thread alone utnil I have pics up

I told you I would hopefully have pics up soon, and by that I mean hopefully sooner than later. I just don't see the point in putting pics of what I have done so far.

Hmmm....that's what I have in mind for mine...
Remove the spare tire and have a "false floor" type setup.

Definitely post pics...
