I was going to do this, but when the 360 came out, didn't want to still run a standard xbox.... I love how you did it... Wish the 360 could be dissassembled and done up the same...

the xBox is way easy to dissassemble and such... I've never looked into the Playstation... I was going to run a hacked XBox in my tC and love the inverterless concept, as that was a pain to work with.

ooOoOoo...someone found something to do with that dead air space.....i hope nothing ever hits you there...that's a lot of money in that corner...haha

i'm surprised you didn't go for wireless controllers...i really, really like the satalite radio display location, but your whole set-up is kick butt!

Its one thing to put a console in your car. I don't think you could get that kind of work out of any custom shop. amazing!

good freaking job and im definately proven wrong on a few things
im curious about afew tings. like how the xbox casing doesnt hit the cupholders/elbowrest. also howd u do ur dvddrive cable (was it bought by the foot or something damn 13' ide cable)? any readerrors?

did i see the pictures wrong or someting but u spent $80ish on the psu but no mod chip or did u tsop?

get the logitech wireless controllers they work even outside the car so ya no ugly wires

ohhh n good job on finding a use for that auxilary space box thing below ur shifter

thanks guys. this project was definitely a labor of love.and hate at some points. and from my standards, far from perfect...but hey. for a guy that never picked up a batch of fiberglass before, and doesn't do this for a living..i think i did ok. btw, the comment about the custom shop.i got my inspiration from a place in California that did a Corvette C5 integrated..but they didn't do the 12v conversion. i talked with them first about the project, to get some insight. their install is sick.
http://www.caraudiomag.com/features/0305cae_arc/

the comment about photoshop is funny. my whole site is done in photoshop, and i swear working in that program is just as tedious sometimes as doing real installs. half the stuff i've done isn't even on yet.

on to the questions...

SO WHY NO WIRELESS CONTROLLER, WHY NO MOD CHIP?
my goal was for an "integration" with a real xbox...no hacks of any kind. and i wanted to stay true to the console..and "legal" in the sense of the box. i'm an adult. i don't need to be driving around with gigs of games and movies i don't own on the harddrive. i think once you modchip the xbox, it's no longer an xbox. maybe just me, but not the theme i was going for.

with that in mind..No, there is no xbox mod chip. the $80 on the psu and about $5 at radio shack is all that is needed for the regulator.
also, i know i could have gone wireless...and i still could. i really debated this for a while. but the box has controller ports..like the ring of fire, it is a distinct character of the box so it really had to stay.
that's why i also extended the ethernet port. why? because it was there too. i could theoretically go head-2-head with someone else at a show.

plus the two are under the coin flipper so they demonstrate the stealth capability. oh and typically the wireless controllers have these huge dongles...and then, i'd have to finda place to mount those so i could demonstrate the ability to plug in say, a memory card..that would be too much work.

WHAT YOU CAN DO DIFFERENTLY/BETTER THAN ME
it is possible to get a wireless router and have that powered by a 5v rail...directly from your XBOX. so still no inverter. then just drive to Starbucks and get on xbox Live! from the parking lot.
Using a Mod chip will allow:
1-run minus the DVD
2-swap out your harddrive..say with a 2.5" laptop drive, smaller, more stable and more room
3-run as either Microsoft Media Center or Linux, or your flavor. the Xbox has the cpu power of a computer and can run as your CarPC.

WHAT'S THE DEAL WITH THE CABLE LENGTH?
ok, about the ide cable. yes, it is possible to use Cat5 or cat6 cable, cut it and use it to extend your IDE. the wire is way too thin for me to solder, and after soldering about 100 other connections to lengten copper, i had enough. the myths about ide max length have been around for a while..but the xbox and old computers used 40 conducter. now that 80 conductor has been out and manufacturers use oxygen free copper, the data capability is much better. no read errors..except the time i ripped the molex right off the cable (test fitting in 100 degrees for the 50th time!) so stupid me, i had to get another cable.

yes, you can mod the ring of fire to be red (good) and green (bad). wire jump, no led involved, pretty simple actually. again, i wanted to stay 'true' to the box. the only thing i did there was jump the power lead to vehicle ignition, so the box turns on automatically a few seconds after the car starts.

I STILL CAN'T TELL WHERE THIS THING LIVES
um, the xbox case doen't hit the elbow rest...because it's not under the elbow rest. check the site, that box is so big i almost gave up a few times because i just could not find a happy place for it. but the rear quarterpanel by the rear seat forward of the wheel well is it's home now.

I LIKE RESIDENT EVIL AND GRAN TURISMO. CAN I DO THIS WITH MY PS2?
about the PS2. yes this is possible, i've heard of success with that project and converting a ps2 to 12v. plus they have that slim version console so you can get more creative with the stealth. but i don't know anything about the sony. sorry, i'm an xbox fan for life. but "would this be possible to do?"...that's how i started my journey months ago. if you're serious, good luck and have fun.

OK, WHAT ABOUT THE 360
Good luck with that one bud. It's a power pig. And it gets HOT. When/if my console finally breaks i suppose i'll start on that project. one issue you need to be aware of...the DVD is tied to the Mobo with a key...just like how on the original box the HD is tied to the Mobo with a key.

VERY NICE WORK...AND WILL YOU DO MINE?
Much appreciated, and from people like engifineer, who actually know what they're doing when it comes to this stuff...rather than my stub-your-toe method. this whole project was me standing on the shoulders of giants and having the patience and tenacity to keep trying things even when i was unsure of the outcome.

not to get all Tony Robbins on you guys, but don't be afraid to take risks. I was so timid about this car last year. "oh my god, i'm going to break something if i try any mod myself. let me jump on SL and find out if anyone will swap my antenna for me!"
get over that real quick. try your own tish, get sweaty and inverted under the driver's seat. rip out your panels...break those stupid 40 cent white clips holding the car together (and get some replacements), blow a fuse...and learn from your mistakes. you'll get a real sense of accomplishment.

just to give credit where credit is due. i had the stereo swapped by pros when i first bought the car...that was when i was in my 'timid' stage. that was the head unit, the amp and xm...i already had the sirius. and they build the sub box too.

then i started taking the car apart over weekends..noticed some work that made me go "i could do this." and some other work that had me shaking my head...like seeing exposed resistors...

so yeah, i had someone plug in the head unit...but then i got tired of shops telling me things i wanted to do couldn't be done...like the xbox, motorization..whatever. so i started to learn to do it myself.

my next car, i'll build the sub box myself and do the leather too. oh yeah..and i'll swap my own darn head unit!
