Default need amp advice for 12w7! in crisis!

hey guys, so its 2am here in the bay area and im up thinking about my new sound system.... and getting pretty upset....

so i supposedly bought a jl 500/1v2 (this is what the guy told me he was selling me he said the "500 slash series" no i dont remember clearly if he said "slash2" or just "slash")... as i JUST realized the amp that is in my car does NOT say 500/1v2, it says 500/1,.... did i get ripped off? i've been trying to go on jl's site to check out the differences but i cant open the site for some reason... basically i want to know if the 500/1 is a discontinued model... or what is the difference between the two?

i also noticed my lights are dimming... i have installed the 12w7 in a sealed enclosure.. what is causing my lights to dimm? is the amp not powerfull enough or is it the other way around?

sorry if im asking too many questions, im just really confused and mad right now... please help me out!

if it were a V2 it would say it 500/1 v.2

as for the lights dimming, its because your amp is putting a draw on your electrical system, get a capacitor and that should clear it up.

i got a 2.5 Farad cap running with my 2 JL w3s and i used to get lights dimming but once i put in the farad cap they went away... it helps your system sound better and on the long run makes your battery last a bit longer since its drawing less wattage at a specific time...

What does the center logo look like on the amp? Is it a black round circle with the white JL logo or is it a black JL logo with no circle?

The v2 has the circle, the v1 doesn't. Both are authentic JL amplifiers, and the V1 is in no way lacking. Download the manual from JL and read how to tune it.

http://mobile.jlaudio.com/pdfs/Slash_amps/500_1_MAN.pdf

You'll also need a 50 Hz zero gain .wav or .mp3 if your head unit can play it. Just search google to find one, burn it to CD and play it.

My guess it that some of the components in the V1 JL amplifier (chips, etc.) are no longer manufactured and they had to change the design slightly for components still in production. This happens a lot in the consumer electronics market. I did not see any new technologies listed, and the controls on the side are even identical.

I think I might need a cap as well, the LED's in my grab handles above the door dim with the music.

ok, well i googled pictures and yeah, i have the 500/1, NOT THE 500/1V2 I BOUGHT! im super mad right now, and im going to call the shop as soon as they open! as for the dimming, i bought a FIVE farad stinger cap, ...and it still dimms... i had the exact same set up in a rav4, with a ported box instead of sealed, and the lights never dimed in that car. is the rav4's radiator/battery stronger than our stock tc's?

a 5 farad should be more than enough for that amp. I run a memphis belle, with a 1 farad cap and I have no dimming issues. Was the cap properly charged when it was installed?

Where did you buy it at and is it new or used? Also, what is your basis for saying you paid for a v2 and were instead delivered a v1? Honestly, if it's just from a phone call with the guy you vaguely recall, you're not going to have much luck. JL is also really strict about who they have as an authorized dealer, if the shop isn't (and if they're still carrying the v1 they probably aren't) it may complicate matters.

Why are you so hung up on the v2? The v1 will sound and perform just as well, if it were me I have much more important things to get upset about, like my xB getting a stress crack on the windshield and my insurance not covering the first $500 (Toyota did end up agreeing to cover it under warranty but I still need to schedule it getting replaced).

So it would seem. When I took it to the dealer, the service guy said he wasn't sure it would be covered because they normally see it within the first few thousand miles. I've got three chips but nothing near the crack, and it happened at a stop light, starting on the very edge under the black rubber and working it's way across. I'm just glad they decided to cover it, there's a class action suit against Toyota for this issue in California, still pending trial.

For the amps, I have a JL Audio 500/1 (version 1) powering two 8w7s and it does an excellent job. Unless you already have a 4 channel v2 amp and are trying to match the look, I wouldn't worry about it. I specifically bought a v1 over a v2 because I already had a 300/4 v1 and wanted them to match.

well if you were to spend over $2k on a system you would make sure you get what you paid for... so that's why im "hung" up on the v2, and because of the fact that he did not tell me there was an hd750 amp that would work better for that sub.. a few things have come up on the system that i dont like not just what i mentioned. for a typical 18 year old girl, $2k is A LOT... and yes this is an authorized dealer...

google the difference between a sealed box and a ported box and see the difference of the power consumption. that might help ya with your little headlight prob, and isnt the jl amp u bought the 500/1. which is a mono block isnt it. which means no need to bridge, it comes out the box ready to deafen. and the 500/2 would mean its a 250x2. which in final load the amps are basically the same arent they.. did u even bother to look up on the internet what u wanted in your set up... or did ya just go to a shop and say u wanted boom boom

Zion, you misunderstand. She has a 500/1, and wanted a 500/1 version 2, or v2 for short. JL Audio updated the amp with a version two, but it's still a 500W mono block amp. I believe she also has only one sub.

I do agree with you though, that the HD750/1 would better suit that driver. I'm not sure why they didn't mention it. Since they're an authorized dealer, hopefully it won't be much of an issue to switch. I do not know what the price difference is between the 500/1 and HD750/1, though I'm assuming the 750 costs more. If they give you crap, try calling JL directly, they may have some pull over their authorized dealers. Their number is:

954-443-1100

Keep in mind they're in Florida so they're EST.

xionlion: no, i did NOT go in and say i want "boom boom" because it is not the first time i get a system, i have a 12" jl w7 in a ported enclosure with the tma 1000w amp and the same 5 farad stinger cap, along with the jl 4 channel amp for my front and rear speakers .. so i know what kind of bass/system i want.... i was only wondering what amp would be best for the same woofer in a sealed enclosure..

Vetttereddie, thanks for helping clear that up.. so i talked to the guy and he was like "well i didnt mention the other amps because i havent worked with them so i couldnt recommend them" blah blah i think that was bull to make up for not mentioning the hd750 amp but whatever. if he cant fix the **** control when i go next week (its not working too well, it doesnt make much of a difference when i turn it, which is bad for when i have loud music and a cop pulls up behind ) then im gonna tell him i want to change the amp. thanks for the number though
