Default Remote start on 5-speed?

Anyone have a 5-sped with a remote start hooked up? What are your experiences with it? Any problems? I want to get the Viper 791XV...do I need anything else to hook up the remote start?

Just get it setup so it works like this....

When you park, you put on the emergency brake (check one).
You press a button (check two)...
...that means when you take your keys out the engine keeps running
When you lock the doors the engine stops.

That way the car knows that as long as those doors aren't unlocked it can start the engine all it wants, becuase there is no way it can still be in gear.

That's how you make remote start fool proof with a manual.

Wouldn't that mean that the engine would die when you unlock the doors?

Why ?

If the doors are unlocked it doesn't disable the engine, it disables the remote start.

I got one. AstroStarter. You have to pull the e-brake up twice, doesn't work if you are in gear. Engine shuts off when you close the door. Great range.

You will have to install it yourself... as no shop will do RS on 5-speeds.... WAY TOO MUCH LIABILITY...

It's not the greatest idea and is a hassle to shut off your car on the ones that are set up right...

I haven't seen a 791 set up for 5 speed remote start... but compustar makes a decent model that has the capability for the 5 speed shutdown sequence built in...

If you don't have a safety sequence... SAVE LIVES and don't do a RS on a manual...

You can also check out www.sounddomain.com and their security forums... Murph knows an insane amount about all options.... just read the faq and search first.

Most pros will advise against RS on a Manual... but it can be done.

Everything in life is a risk. Walking across the street is a risk.

You'll find shops that WILL do it. If you aren't sure what to do, don't do it yourself. Let the shop take liability. It's not legal in MA either but I got a warranty and a reciept. Cost me $600 for the remote stater/two way pager/alarm. I called some places and it ranges up to $800 for it. Extra for the liability, makes sense. Had it for a year, no troubles. Did take them all day to do it because tC were new last year.

Yes, that very model in fact. Works flawlessly. Just leave the car in neutral with the ebrake on and you'll be fine. And if you do leave it in gear and try to remote start it, it won't start the first time, but it will if you try again. No problems turning it on or off either. So if you think you're going to forget whether the car is in gear or not, then I'd advise against it.

i used to work at circuit crapness long time ago, so many people wanted remote start on manuals, but we always says no. you just cant be too carefull all the time, the installer i used to work with left his on gear on an incline infront of a garage. well long story short the car went inside the door without knocking!

everybody has an idiot gene in them. there will be a time you will forget.

I got the Viper 791XV with 5-speed. Love it, great range. Any shop will do it, you just have to go in and talk to them well atleast in VA. Got a real good price too...

Talked to a service guy at my local scion dealership, and he told me about a guy that went in for an oil change and had a remote starter on his manual. Well to make a long story short, he didn't tell them about it and they started his car while he had it parked in gear and crashed his tC into a fence.

^^^^ That's awesome ^^^^ That's why I don't have one... I trust myself... but all it takes is someone to play with my gear shift while it's parked and hold a button down on my remote and weeeeee...... jumping car!

That's the owners fault for not telling the service guys. And the car won't try to start itself without the remote telling it to do so. Simply disconnecting the battery and plugging back in will not start the car.

I have a friend who's Mom is crippled becuase some guy had a rigged up remote start on his car. She was walking in front of the car in a parking lot when the guy hit the switch. The car jumped forward and pinned her between the bumper and a wall which shattered her pelvis and femur.

The car owner had to file for bankruptcy and my friends mom probably won't walk again for the rest of her life. 2 lives were ruined with the push of a button.

Food for thought when adding dangerous and illegal "features" to your car.
