Default Satellite radio - buzz

A friend of mine just traded his '05 tC for an '06 and did away with the FM modulator for his Audiovox Sirius receiver, connecting it straight to the 1/8" auxillary cable that's either in the console or glove box (I haven't seen it). But he says it's buzzing when hooked up that way, so he's gone back to connecting through the FM modulator. Is there a way to connect it to the aux. cable and avoid the buzz?

Also, if the buzz is unavoidable there, I know people with '05s use an converter box (US Spec, PIE, etc.) to connect it to the aux input connectors on the back of the radio. Is that still necessary with an '06 to connect it there? I don't see why you can't use a simple cable similar to this (click), instead of having to buy a $50 converter box (which usually lower sound quality slightly).

I believe the Audiovox Sirius receiver has a function that turns on and off the FM Modulator. Try turning that off. I'm pretty sure this is the problem.

Thanks. So that's a software selection in the Audiovox? Why does that make it buzz.

Do you know, can the sat. receiver not be connected to the back of the radio witout a box? Then that mp3 port would be open for my an mp3 player.

It buzzes because the audiovox receiver is transmitting a signal to your radio, and at the same time sending a signal through the plug. I remeber I had this problem when I installed this same unit in a Acura MDX. I took apart that radio and receiver so many times, and I knew it was something stupid and easy! The FM Modulator was on. duh!!

What box are you talking about? On the back of the radio, if there is an auxiliary port (plug or harness), then you would just need a harness that goes there.

I'm talking about a converter box as I mentioned in the OP. RCA in on one side, and OEM harness on the other end to hook into the radio. Like:
https://www.scionlife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=106439
https://www.scionlife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=67318
etc

As I asked in the OP, is that needed? I didnt know why people were using it. Maybe just needed for an '05. Seems just a cable (like I linked in the OP) would do, like you say.

What I use when I install ipods or mp3 players in the scions is an IPAC-OEM (for ipod), or an AUX-BOX (for mp3). The aux-box has rca, and the ipac-oem has an ipod cable. These boxes are universal (PAC makes them), but you would need to get the toyota harness (ab-toyx).

But like you said, its a little expensive.

Here is the AUX-BOX;

IPAC-OEM:

That AB_TOYT harness just looks like it Y's into the main audio connector 'block', instead of just being a straight cable to the aux input block on the back of the radio? Why not use them (aux input block)? I think the aux input is shown in one of the previous threads I linked.

You couldn't just use a cable like this?
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-MXT4Sas...0&I=023AUXIN1R
I thought that's what you were meaning here:
"What box are you talking about? On the back of the radio, if there is an auxiliary port (plug or harness), then you would just need a harness that goes there."

Why is the aux-box necessary?

BTW, unfortunately the buzz isn't being caused by his FM modulator signal. He had already tried turning that off. Anything else I can check?

What part are you saying to ground? It's already grounded is it not?

I heard the noise myself for the first time this weekend. It's actually not a buzz, but a typical engine/ignition whine.

I have the same problem with my 2006 tC and my Sirius PnP unit. I have a Streamer, which is similar to a Sportster.

This was my post:
https://www.scionlife.com/forums/vie...asc&highlight=

I am using a $25 Monster cable now from the aux. output on the Streamer to the Aux. input in the console. Still have the problem.

Not sure what else to do. Just going to deal with it until I can buy and install the Scion Sirius tuner setup.

I had the same problem with my xm radio. I bought the $25 monster cable and tried to run it through the input in the consol. When i did this the radio would buzz and squel. I took it to a couple of different car audio shops and they said it was picking up some sort of interference some where within the wiring between the imput in the consol and the radio. They sold me an FM Modulator and I have had no problems since.

You all should get a ground loop noise isolator instead. The sound quality improves greatly and there is no more whine. If you guys do anything else you are wasting time and money. Go to Circuit City and get this>> Metra Tsunami 50- Watt Ground Loop Isolator (FLGL400)$14.99 to remove ground loop noise and improve sound quality. It worked for me.

Guess we'll try that. Thanks. The Metra FLGL400 has RCA in/out. Doesn't the Sirius have 1/4" mini jack out? There's a FL-GL405 too, which seems to have bare leads. Maybe that replaced the FL-GL400 (which isn't on their website).

BTW, he's using either a Sirius Starmate ST2 or Sirius Streamer GTR now.

With the isolator, the sound would better since it will be connected directly to the H/U instead of using FM (is that what you meant?). But the isolator itself couldn't increase sound quality (in fact it should lower it a bit, though maybe not enough to notice), other than getting rid of the whine. Maybe that's all you meant.

What I did was convert the mini jack out (from the satellite tuner) to rca. I then plugged in the Metra FLGL400. I then converted the rcas from the the isolator back to the mini jack and then plugged it in the Aux input. I tied up all the cables and put them under my seat. Your right about the isolator itself couldn't increase sound quality but it does get rid of the whine, which is a sound quality improvement. You can buy the converter cables and male to female converters all at Circuit City for a small price.
