sick of roof making crack(le)'ing noise!
I love my car ....i think that for the price and quality of the tC ...i have a great car. I cant stand the crackle sound comming from my roof. I have brought my car into the dealership 4 times and they say they fixed the problem but it always comes back a few months later. Does anybody know the warranty on such an issue? I have a 100k warranty on the car but i would think that something like this wouldnt be covered for 100k miles. I was thinking about finding out how to take the roof panel off (when the warranty expires) and use a dynomat kind of substance to kill the sound. Does anybody think this would work? I only have 18k miles on my car but have had the sound for the past 8k miles. If anybody knows the answer to either (or both) questions please give feedback. This is one issue I need to do the right thing with because its really bothering me. Prob in feb I am going to take sections of the car apart and dynomat (something like that) the trunk, doors, and rear side panels where the speakers are. Should I just do the roof also or will this not fix the crackle sound? I know they already replaced the tracks and that was under warranty but I think the sound is now comming from the beam a few inches from the rear/top light.
I have decided to sell my tC from the noises and overall shabby build quality. It was a nice car but I keep saying its a nice car for the money. Like it isn't quite up to my satisfaction. So I'm letting it go. Good luck fixing your tC.
I think for $130 I can get enough deadening material to do everything plus put some on the roof ...I think this is all my car will need to bring it to the level I will be happy with. I have to replace the speakers so it sounds like Ill be doing all of this at the same time in feburary.
yea but wouldnt the rattle be caused by vibration? I dunno.... im ____ed off the darn thing is still making the noise. There has to be someone else on this forum that had the same issue and it was resolved in "x" fashion ....meaning...someone here has to have gone through what I am and the dealership finally fixed it by doing "...whatever they did"....

Also, do you think i should bring it to an other dealer since this one doesnt seem like they are able to fix the problem?
Ive been to multiple dealers and they are all the same. It almost seems like there is inherent flaw in the cars design or something. The rattles never go away no matter what. And its not just from one area, its like everywhere.
my sunroof makes a loud POPPING noise every time I go over a bump at an angle. Whenever the car flexes. Its annoying when I am alone, kind of embarrassing when there are people in my car. I want to get rid of my TC too, but owe more than the car is worth so I cant afford to trade it in right now
rattles suck... i understand this. but think of it this way, i work at at shop and drive numerous different vehicles on a daily basis. you name it, i've probably driven in it at one time or another. all cars have rattles, some way some how....even 70k bmw, mercedes, etc. what you should really be worried about is the important parts of the car, brakes, shocks, maintence shedule.....our cars have some of the least problems with those things out of all of them. i have bmw, mercedes, jaguars coming in every 10-12k miles for complete brake jobs and tires.... ford suvs blowing out ball joints at 40K miles....1000+ for that repair. So all i'm saying is that if all we have to _____ about is rattles here and there, but dont have to do anything but change the oil, rotate tires, and replace inexpensive brake parts at 30k+ miles, we should consider ourselves lucky...

If you can't stand the rattles, you should get rid of your car. I don't think the rattles can be fixed. However, there's no guarantee that another brand or model will not have the same problem. I'm kinda used to it so the rattles don't bother me.
I have little rattles here and there while I'm driving and they don't seem fixable. I am very happy it does not rattle from my sound system though. When my subs or mid/bass hit its nothing but smooth sound. I used Edead on all the panels that got exposed when taking out my interior.
i was thinking about deadening up the roof ....less vibration might reduce the crackle a tad. i love my car because so far i have had no problems but the roof so i do consider that a good thing. ....how long is the warranty good for for a roof sound like this?
The reason there is no definitive way to fix all the rattles are because there are many of them. Not all occur in every car though. Deadening isn't a bad plan around the speakers and stuff, but that's not going to do it all. I doubt there is going to be a rattle you can't fix if you can find it. Drive around with a friend. Pinpoint each. Take off the panel covering it and see if you can stop it. If you're dedicated enough, I'm sure it can be done.
I don't know if it would even take that - I'm thinking more like foam tape and patience. If you could get just the biggest one or two you'd probably notice a huge difference. There are lots of how to's around here, but they only apply if that's your specific problem. Honestly though, I think we have to put up with the fact that we have an affordable, reliable car that is prone to making a bunch of squeaks and rattles.
I have the easiest and most used solution to the rattle problem... turn up the radio. Normally I have the stereo up loud enough I'm either not hearing the car rattle or my bass is creating a ton more... hehe, I know its not really an answer but its my solution. sorry for your troubles, though. ;)
Yeah... I'd use the radio solution but when the car is loud, which isn't always an option for me, but even when I do turn it up, I can't hear the car. The engine and transmission noises are kinda helpful to smooth driving and shifting so I like to at least have the option. In a pinch though, just blasting the music has it's upside.
blah - i wanna get rid of the rattle .....not turn up my radio. Does anybody have a how-to in taking off the rear roof piece by the back light? If i knew what material to get and how to take this off I would spend the money and try to fix it better then the dealer has.
