Default Using the steering wheel controls to control other devices?

Would it be possible to use the steering wheel controls to control other things within the tC? I see that engifineer is always looking for new projects... perhaps this could be one?

I'd like to use the mode and seek controls for perhaps the heat, (mode and fan level) and use the volume controls for the sunroof. I'd be happy with moving the sunroof controls to the steering wheel (I hate them up top) and nothing else, but I was trying to find a use for all 5 buttons.

Does anyone know how difficult this would be to do? Perhaps some other ideas for things to move to the steering wheel?

It's possible if you know how to re-wire a whole bunch of wires and stuff. Possible but unlikely accomplished.

Is there a way to make the seek buttons go to the next preset on the radio instead of just changing to the next frequency?

Kinda defeats the purpose of the steering wheel controls. They're to keep you from looking at the radio, but you have to look if you're cycling through frequences.

My electrical engineer of a boyfriend was able to rewire the Mode button to honk the horn, the volume toggles the turn indicators and the seek to manipulate the cruise controls.

This way, I never have to even MOVE my fingers!!!!

No, not really, but he did figure out how to integrate the controls for my aftermarket headunit without any other accessory parts....now THAT is impressive!

gfy buddy.

Tis merely an idea on making my scion different from yours... I don't have the stock headunit in my car, and thus I wanted to make the controls useful to me. My previous cars have all lacked the steering wheel controls thus I'm accustomed to "stretching out my hand and pressing the buttons". If I wanted an opinion on how lazy I am, I would have asked my fiance, not some tween online. Keep your comments to yourself next time.

it's actually not a bad idea, I believe other cars let you do the same kind of things with the HVAC with the steering wheel. Flaming was totally unecessary, I mean people do stupid crap to their cars all the time so why the hell is doing something for convience such a "bad" thing?

and that is why i said get a maybach.....duhhhhh......yeah other cars give you that option mostly luxury cars....something that a tc is not......well to each its own.....im happy wit the interior features my tc offers only thing i would change would be the manual seat controls.....takes away from the fully powered package that the tc is.....i would add sum buttons to control the seats......but as far as re-routing wires to control the sunroof and HVAC controls instead of the radio in my opinion is just not worth the hassle.....now if the car came like that it would be ok......this wants to re-route wires.....well good luck....let us know how it turns out ......lets hope you dont reroute the wrong wire and instead of opening ur roof with the volume button you dont open ur hood latch going 60 in the highway......that would not be cute.....anyways good luck....ill be waiting on the updates

There are some people on this forum that I'd love to meet, and there are others I'd love to find out how they were able to make it to the ripe old age of 24. Using words like "duhhhhh" and "sum", and the ever-popular face, is a surefire way to prove your maturity and knowledge base.

Who are you to decide what I should and should not do to my car. Yes I know its not a Maybach, BMW, or even a Lexus... Regardless its my car, and I should be able to do what I choose. I come here to ask for suggestions and to see what other (what I thought were) more intelligent people think. My apologies for thinking outside of your abilities, I'll be sure to dumb down the rest of my ideas as to not confuse you.

PS: If anyone can tell me how I can bypass a 2 stage mechanical hood switch by "rerouting" some wires, Let me know. .... an no, duct taping 18ga wire to the steering wheel does not count.
