wow. ignore elpreswhatever. talk about checking every 2 minutes. i think he's the only one in the "stabfest"

anyway. i want to put a computer in my car and remove the stock head unit. that would make my steering wheel controls unusable. so, i also want to make those buttons control my computer somehow. volume up and down, source, and other options.
your question is something i've had on my mind, just not applied in the same way. hopefully you find the best way to do it before i start my project. that way i can take notes ;)

i owe that to lots of downtime at work.....but its makin my day go by much quicker!!....thanks to all.....and now that i think about it those controls would be very useful if u can control ur seat witth them....move them up down, even make them fold so that the passengers in the back could get in and out.......so yeah let us know how it turns out.....

If you don’t have a stock HU, then good idea to use those existing buttons to be useful. It’s completely opposite of being lazy. A lazy person would just leave those buttons there doing absolutely nothing.

And to use them for the sunroof is a great idea. I like to cruise in town with my sunroof open and close it when I get on the highway. Kinda hard to steer with one hand, shift with the other, and close the roof at the same time.

I haven’t yet fooled around with it (still have a stock HU) but it doesn’t sound that difficult. The buttons more than likely just change the logic levels of the signal wires that originally connected to the stock HU and can be easily integrated to work with any other system that uses a simple push button. I’ll take it apart this weekend and post any ideas that I can work up. Thanks for the idea DivisionbyZero, I know a couple people that will probably want it done.

As for the a-hole that has nothing better to do than to rag on people for thinking of new ideas, while contributing absolutely nothing but useless immature commentary... I’ll take a DoUbLe WhOpPeR, hOlD tHe OnIoNs. And please consult your picture diagrams so you don’t screw it up this time…

OK I"m an idiot, I swear when I pressed the next button it didn't go to my next preset, but the manual says it should. I'll check in the morning.

wow, bashing someone for no apparent reason. just because someone wants to do something you don't like its wrong? i don't understand why you have to bash him for doing something that doesn't affect you in any way. yeah yeah this is a forum and you can state your opinion, but you can't insult someone just because he wants to do something you probably too lazy to do.

I'm going to borrow a scope this weekend to see if I can figure out what the signal wires do exactly. First on my list is to determine what power the stock HU supplies the steering wheel controls, then see if I can more or less brute force the results. (aka the easy part) I think the hardest part is going to be taking the output from the buttons themselves and interpreting them to do separate things.

I pulled out the diagram off of the sticky above, let me know what you come up with and perhaps we can get something working.

I took Digital Circuit Design far to many years ago, I'm hoping this will be a refresher course.

Here’s how I would do it. Remove all resistors from the board. Connect the orange wire to ground. Then just run a wire from the non-common side of each switch.

Then run the wires up to the moon-roof switch and connect to the respective wires.

You now have set of parallel ground switches so either set of switches will open and close the roof.

For other buttons (particularly ones that aren’t ground switches) you’ll have to cut the trace (on the steering wheel control board) to remove the switch from ground potential. Then simply run wires from each side of the switch and connect to each side of the switch to be duplicated.

I never use the seek buttons on the steering wheel control, so I think I am going to just remove them from the circuit and wire them up to the moon-roof. Since they are normally-open it won’t effect the audio control circuit so the volume and mode buttons will still work.

Visit Japan sometime, they already exist. I think I even saw one in Miami once though, and they're in hospitals sometimes now.
