What are our THREADED shift knob options?
I'm in the market for a new shift ****.. Was thinking about the "OEM" OBX shift ****.. is it threaded? Does the stock shift boot attach to it like stock?
Any other really nice threaded shift ***** we can get that allow for the factory shift boot to attach?
Thanks,
Jay

IF it's like the one for the xB (which I'm sure it would be) it has a self threading plastic insert...mine was total crap though and the chrome was flaking off the **** straight out of the box...I definately don't reccomend the OBX stuff
Well it's not threaded, it's self threaded. So it's smooth plastic and when you turn it it threads itself.
On mine the top of the shift **** unscrews and then you drop the insert down inside the **** and it seats itself in a notch. Then you screw the top back on and thread the **** onto the stick. The plastic is held in place by the notch inside the shift ****...sorry if that doesn't make sense...can't think of any other way to explain it.

Sounds like crap, either way. I've NEVER liked OBX products.. they are obviously made for Pep Boys and Autozone.. but I was actually impressed by the OBX sport pedals which were custom molded for the stock stuff. And they fit well and don't feel they are about to cause me an accident by being loose. The shift **** doesn't sound as promising though.. The way you describe it, it sounds like there's potential it can pop right off the shifter..
Does it atleast support the stock shift boot or no?
Jay

I agree with you it is pep boys crap and definately could slip right off if you've threaded it on and off enough times, those "self made" threads can only hold for so long.
For the shift boot I had to slide the chrome ring up a notch and it fit fine...the other option is to take the center console apart and take the shift boot off and flip it inside out so the chrome trim ring thing is flipped upside down and it fills the gap...G H E T T O

Hmmm.. Do you know of any other makes out there that have a nice threaded **** (for Toyota/Scion only) ASIDE from the TRD one? For some reason I just don't like the look of the TRD.. I like circle/round ***** (Most comfortable for me)..

I personally like the stock **** and have seen the TRD which looks very similar. Greddy makes some round ***** as well as Sparco. The Greddy uses the same thread technique as the OBX though and the Sparcos use the ghetto allen screws.
Here's a link to the Greddy ***** at Ptuning.com http://www.ptuning.com/html/search-r...e&cmbYear=2006

Well in the description on that website.. it says the Greddy ***** use "OEM style screw type makes installation simple and mounting secure."
Which has the end-user believing it has Toyota/Scion threads on the innards of the ****. But you say it uses a plastic insert that also inserts into the ****, correct?
Ha, maybe we ought to be using AIM or something.. hit me up if you have it, my name is Noisrevid.

I like the 8 ball idea!
I ordered the silver OBX shift **** for my '07 tC last week and the TRD leather one came in. So if you have a '07 order a shift **** for a '06 other wise you'll get the leather one. I have to wait till next week to get mine, from what they told me there's no problem with it and for what it costs it better be good lol.

..... you guys need to know that OBX switched out to brass threaded inserts which are only needed for the automatics...
the insert isn't needed for a manual.. and fits perfectly... they are fine quality products.
so salteen and Diversion.. they're not crap.

the one that I have for my manual needed the plastic insert and the "chrome" was peeling off right out of the box. I stand firm that the one that I have is total crap, but that is cool if they fixed the issues with their product.

I had an OBX **** for my xA and it worked great.
FYI, the stock **** is a plastic self threading ****. . . and no they will not slip off, unless you over tighten it on like an idiot.
In fact, a good majority of aftermarket shift ***** are self threading. . .
But on the quality part, my shift **** on the xA held up fine. . . with zero problems. I'm now considering one for the tC. I like the fact that they sit flush with the chrome ring on the shift boot (if you put it on right). Most aftermarket ***** do not, and leave a gap. I actually bought a high quality weighted, but the gap just got to me. And IMO, you don't really need a super heavy **** for the tC tranny, as it shifts fine.
The OBX fatboy is nice, as the thread insert has different height adjustment settings so that you can eliminate that gap I'm talking about. However, I too have heard of a few bad stories about their shift *****, but not many. The most common? The gear indicator thingie at the top comes loose (due to bad glue), but it can be glued back on. The second most common issue was that the plastic printed carbon fiber cover comes loose (due to glue) and spins around the ****. I had this happen too, but it took all of 5 minutes and 99cents to fix. Personally, I like the design and the fact that it has the gear pattern printed on it. I don't want some idiot valet or newb driver driving to shift into 6th gear, or looking for R where 1st gear is.
