who can guess what happen here?? burnt ground chassis wire
Driving along minding my own business, turn onto another road...give the car gas oh noes car ain't moving. Look down to the gauges to see everything turned off, radio still going, ac fan still blowing.....Tried to start it but it wouldn't budge.....
Pull over, noticed smoke coming out from under my hood. OHHHH SHHHHHHHlllTTTTTTT. First thought that came to mind is that I don't have a fire extinguisher, and the second thought is that I have no more warranty, 70K+ miles on the car. POP the hood noticed the wire was burnt to a crisp. Touched it, it was burning hot. Took a look at the fuses in the one box under the hood, nothing popped. Made sure everything look clear. Hopped back in the car and it started...sigh of relief. Now I am sitting and waiting for my cousin to pick me up so I can get a new wire terminal and I can stick my 0/1gauge wire in place of that.....
The starter ground wire is still intact, it didn't melt with the chassis ground wire even though it was taped together.
Now I am scared to drive the car....

I was driving my dads avalon and that same thing happened to me. I spelt burning and then the gauges started tripin out then went out. It turns out that something just heated up a wire and it eventually melted enough to ground out on another wire causing intense heat smoke and a melted ground wire going to the starter. We replaced the wire and the starter and drove it around no problem for a few months until my sister totaled it by running a stop sign. I would not be too worried. Just go thru your fuses and make sure there all the right ones and that somebody didnt accidently put a wrong fuse in a wrong spot.

That was the factory wires....I never touched them.
That is orange and that is the ground for the starter. The chassis ground was wrapped along with it. They are both negative. However I guess after over 2 years with a stereo system and stock electrical, something has to give but luckily it was something simple that burnt up not my amp, alternator, or worst the whole car!!!!
