Default XBMC Carputer complete

Hey everyone I figured I'd post my project info incase anyone has any questions on the info or just wants ideas.

For the non readers, here is a link to photos:
http://www.ifuwanttolisten.com/xbox/?dir=xbox

And for everyone else, here is some info:

What I got:

Xbox v1.6
Xenium Mod chip
Xbox Media Center (7/9/06 T3ch Release w/ MC360 skin)
160gig HD
Xbox Dvd playback remote for controls
Logitech wireless controllers incase anyone wants to game.
M1-atx Dc-DC 90w Power supply (required major mods to cable and extra circuit)
Lilliput 619gl 7" LCD
Custom screen housing made by: bemboweNOSPAM@gmail.com
Pioneer DEH-P4800MP Headunit (using aux in for xbox sound)

Basically I removed the right foam compartment in the truck and laid down a rubber type mat to keep the xbox from slidding. I ran all the wires 100% hidden through the vechicle. I also ran a controller extension cable (3 6ft Cables daisy chained) into the front cubby hole to mount the IR receiver for xbox.

My headunit has been relocated to the glove box and I am still brainstorming a way to make it look completely flush and professional.

My Lilliput screen housing was made by a TC owner I found on the MP3car forums. His contact info is above.. Just remove the No Spam

The Power setup was the bread and butter of the project. I knew going into it that i did not want to mess with any inverters being it is just a great loss of efficientcey going from 12v to 110v and back to 12v. It took a vast amount of reading and research. Basically I used the m1-atx carputer 90w psu. I had to do major modification to the ATX connector to be compatible with the xbox pinout, and also had to create a transistor circuit to trick the power on into working properly. I found all this info in a tread linked to in my link below. I also split a 12v line off the harddrive connector to run up to my LCD panel so it could be set to auto on w/ the xbox. My system powers up 5seconds after ACC on and then powers off entirely 5sec after ACC off.

More info on my power setup can be found here:
http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=81061

Feel free to post your opinions, comments and questions.

Also on a side note:

I no longer have a dvd drive in the box since I never use it. I mounted the new psu in the location and removed the old one.

I also used a normal harddrive power connector to be used as a quick disconnect for Power in, Power out to lcd, ground, ACC in.

The xbox alone w/o dvd drive pulls about 3.6 Amps and the full setup with the screen is pulling about 4.45 Amps. I used The psu has a 15A fuse onboard and I put a 10A fuse in line by the battery since I figure It should never go that high.

not sure what you mean about signal to the screen w/ loud sound.. the video line goes to the screen and audio straight to the headunit... i have had it cranked up and everything is fine... my setup is only using about 54W on a 90W psu so power isn't a problem.

As far as road conditions. I think it should be fine.. I live in FL so its not like I have rocky terrain or anything rough. I put a rubber mat under the box which should absorb some of the shock. And anyways harddrives are cheap and I have everything backed up on my pc.

ill take it u dont have a sub in the back? (i heard laptop hd would work better but $$$)

n by signal i mean is it clean and doesnt get distorted at peaks wen your sounds is pretty loud. because with my setup (i have a sub) almost every sound my sub makes distorts the signal kinda like youll see a line or few move

no i dont have a sub.. and don't really have intention of getting one... i like having my car basically empty since i go on trips often and need the cargo space. i think if anything i'm going to replace my 4 speakers with something nicer, but i don't really listen to anything that needs the extra bass

nice you have a pic of the lilliput in your car. I just ordered mine and didn't know how well it fits in there. Look like the housing for the lilliput can be made a little smaller. But anyway, Congrats on putting a modded Xbox in your car!

hey man i've got basically the same setup (except i have my buttons molded into the door so i can change tracks and browse while i'm driving w/out a controller) and i have 3 12's in the back - never had a problem with my hard drive, but it is something i gave some thought to. it's been running for over a year....

Yo, looks very beautiful, Can you post pics of the skin. I didnt realise you could use the skins( road runner i assume) with media center. Also are you using the touchscreen at all?

I have an Xbox not a PC. I am running xbox media center as my dashboard... (i am guessing road runner is a pc app):
http://www.xboxmediacenter.com/

Here is the skin info:
http://blackbolt.x-scene.com/?p=skins&cat=mc360

And as far as the touch screen goes, it is currently not supported on xbox media center so I did not install it when i put my monitor back together being those little dots on it made the picture blurry and i figured the glass would cause glare. So i am just running the LCD.

and thanks again bembowe for making the screen housing

uh xbmc is a port of xp media center edition....

i use port in the generic sense, but basically it was drawn heavily from it.
the only thing i wish i had is remote start for the xbox - in the morning sometimes i upload new albums to it (wifi) and i have to go out and turn on the box first. the box is also running off of a UPS so the car's on/off status does not affect it (so that when i go into the grocery store or whatever i can just pause the track and its waiting for me when i get back out there, instead of having the browse through the albums again and find it)

its just one of those bigass black APC ones - i got it for free @ work...i use a regular ol' inverter (my original intent was to go your route and do a supply specifically for carputer type applications, but lazyness steered me away from that, heh..)

i charged it up once fully in my house and then dumped it in the car. i had to take out the beeping mechanism that warns you that your UPS isn't getting power (because obviously it would beep constantly while the car is off), but i've never had it go down all the way. i have my HDD set to spin down after 5 mins of idle, and there are times that i think i've had the xbox on for an hour or two w/out the car running and have had no issues...the nice thing is that worst case scenario is that you leave your xbox on and drains the UPS, but it has no possible way of killing your battery since the UPS only draws power when the car is on.

this thread also influenced me to throw the 360 skin up on xbmc, and it looks pretty nice! thanks for the motivation!

oh i also forgot to mention, my next job is going to be eavesdropping on the touchscreen signals w/ a logic analyzer, and then coding up something quick on a CPLD that will transform those signals into USB ones - XBMC does in fact support touchscreens as long as they are USB - there have been a few people w/ other touch head units (eclipse i think) that have done this, but unfortunately i haven't seen anyone do it with mine so i'm starting from scratch...
