Default 14.5 gallon tank

if we have a 14.5 gallon tank and you wait to fill up when the gas light comes on, why does it only put around 12 gallons in the car?

Because the light comes on as a warning. It doesn't mean it's empty. It leaves you enough gas to safely get to a gas station (within reason).

Say you're on the highway and the nearest gas station is like 50 miles (ok... maybe it happens). So you would need like 2 gallons to get there. Your light comes on - and according to your numbers, you'd have about 2.5-3 gallons left after the light comes on. Plenty to get to that gas station.

I guess just consider the light a reminder. It doesn't mean "fill up now!" but it's just like "you're probably going to need gas soon."

Maybe next time you can drive it to the gas station when its really really low and run it till the engine cuts off from no fuel then refuel and see what it reads.

Just a thought...

id rather it tell me ahead of time. id rather be safe than sorry, id rather fill up when that gas light turns on, instead of having to fill up on the side of the road aiting for AAA. All cars give you a warning, they arent going to have the light turn on 1 second before your car turns off.

I'm just glad the tC has a fuel light. My first truck didn't have one, and on one embarassing day... *flashback*

Me and my girl went to a neighboring(bigger) city to go to the mall(to return a tux from prom the night before). It was her birthday, so we went out to eat, saw a movie, shopping, etc. When we got ready to head home, the gas guage was at 3/4 of a tank(20 gallon tank), and our trip was around 35-40 miles long. More than enough fuel to get home. We passed through a town with gas stations and I checked my fuel guage, still 3/4 of a tank, then half way between this town and the next town, the truck dies. I pull over and check everything, it's all good, then I notice the guage has dropped to well below empty. I manage to start it and haul cheeks, then coast to a stop. I ended up pushing the truck up a slight hill in flip flops while she steered. Luckily a friend of mine saw me and picked us up.

Happy Birthday! was all I could tell her.

None of my previous vehicles have had any light... not that I let it run too far anyways, but it's nice to know it's there.

Maybe you should read the manual. It CLEARLY states that the gas light comes on when you have an estimated 2 gallons left. And doing some ELEMENTARY math you have: 14 - 2 = 12 gallons per fill. Brilliant.

Come on people.

* flash-back too*
Remember was having dinner with my ex-gf in a japanese restaurant. I was overwhelmed the by the magic that nite with her, actually left my car on with the keys in and I LOCKED the car myself by locking it inside before i left the car (not my tC ).

Then we found out when we get to the car, then I realized how low the gas indicaor could be

Huey why do you ask so many (fill in comment here) questions as if you have never driven a car before or have absolutely no knowledge of how an automobile operates?

the 2 gallon extra is to ensure that the fuel pump doesn't run dry. since what lubricates the fuel pump is the fuel.. runs dry, goodbye to the fuel pump.. hence the warning coming on early..

That's funny. The first pic is NOT me, the 2nd pic I don't know what that is, the 3rd pic is a graphic I did for SE-DFW's first meet, the 4th pic is of my car club logo from back when I had my xB and was co-founder/member of StyleWagons...it's actually in Durant Scion's owner's gallery on their website.

Also, if you were to google my first and last name, you would find a couple of hits on me. 1 of them is a quote I had in the Dallas Morning News on the Scion community in DFW.

I'm famous, I guess.
