I remember someone from here said that he/she reach 60 mph at 3k rpm. I just kinda worry that mine reach 60 at little over 3k. Just wondering how you guys think about this. Is this mean that he/she treat engine well ( I'm not sure how describe it) and I didn't?

I reach 65 when I get to 3000... it's almost exact. I have manual trans.

i have an auto, and around 2500 rpm, i go somewhere around 65. when i reach 3000, it goes 75. i guess thats why the tC gets better mpg for auto? or am i thinking of another car?

Actually, the auto is about 1mpg better city/high way (mine might be higher though... not sure it was almost exact on something fro 3500). But ya, you're right about the tC.

It all depends on how new the engine is. The longer you've had the car, the more your tach will settle down, because you've broken the engine in completely and it will run more smoothly and efficiently.

Yeah... it all depends on how broken in your engine is.

I did some pretty extensive highway driving this past week and I got about 250 miles on half a tank of gas. I was pretty impressed.

Breaking the engine in has nothing to do with speed in each gear.....The engine spinning at 3000 (or whatever) is connected to the wheels through gears. Breaking in the engine will not affect any components speed in relation to another.

The rpm per mph will not change unless your clutch is slipping. And then it will not last long. Your engine is coupled to the tranny (and then to the wheels) via a particular set of gear ratios. This cannot change.

i agree.....in my auto, seems like at 3000-3250 i'm at 80-85

I'll have to confirm this when I get back home tomorrow night, but my car (5 speed) hits almost 4k at 80, that's way off of the guy who gets 80-85 @ 3k-3.25k

he's talking about the auto. my 5sp is at 3k at about 65mph.

I have a manual, 65mph is 3000rpm.
I have a question for the manual owners though.. at when you are shifting from 3rd to 4th gear at 40mph.. what is your rpm at? mine is at around 3200rpm or so.. not 3000.
I'm just wondering about this coz when ever I shift at 3000rpm, the speeds are 15, 25, where the book saids to shift. but at 40, the rpm is 3200ish.. so help me out, thanks.

make sure its in "D" not 3. CHECK IT.

It is always possible that there is small variations in our gear ratios, and when multiplied many times (xrpm), you may see the notice in your speed in relation. Don't worry about this though, the variance (if any) is probably so small we couldn't even notice.

They machine gears with a specific number of teeth. There is no way there is a variation in gearing. The ratio between these gears determines the speed for a given rpm. Unless they vary the number of teeth per gear between cars (which they do not) then the ratios NEVER change. Now, if you have an auto which is running a different rpm at a given speed than other ones in the same car.... well, your tranny is burning up sometime soon.

i have an auto at 70 mph my rpm is at 3000 i don't think breaking in has anything to do with it,i'm at 9000 miles on my odo and the reading is the same as when the car was brand new off the show room floor,by the way how many miles do you have to put on the box to break in the motor?
