Default All the low mpg complaint threads

There are so many threads in which are people complaining about the tC's mileage. I drive my tC normally for the most part and during summer months, I already get over 200 miles at the half tank mark.

On the highway, I typically drive at 70mph (65-75) and I get very close to EPA mileage. In city driving, I never go below 22 mpg. I'm beginning to wonder if the tC's average real world mpg is low simply because there are so many young people driving this car with a heavy foot.

yea... thats why they get bad mileage. im 19 and have a pretty heavy foot but i still get decent mileage. i know that if i wanted to get epa mileage, i need to drive like the average adult.

people need to stop _____ing about gas mileage and their little rattles. play some music, drive softer, or buy a real luxury car. everyones so negative around here. how about all the good things the scions have? power everything, cold a/c, decent motors, etc, all for under $20k.

LOL! I have no issues with the mileage whatsoever but I have major issues with the rattles.

Interior materials are nice but seems poorly put together. Every week there's a new squeek or rattle.

I think some people just drive with a lead foot and heavy braking and expect 35 mpg ratings, which isn't going to happen. Don't race between lights, shift at 2.5k (for automatics, sorry, you guys are out of luck), and give it a good amount of throttle in each gear. Get to highest gear as quickly as possible, don't accelerate super slowly - that wastes gas.

Coast to stops... don't just brake like you would in an automatic at the last second or just throw it in neutral. Use passive engine braking (use the braking in your current gear down to about 1k, don't try to downshift just to get braking - that's wasteful and unnecessary). If you're going to be waiting for something/someone for more than about a minute, shut off the engine.

Just simple, common sense things like that can help a lot . I got 30 mpg on my last tank (all "city" driving), and that was with underinflated tires as well (situation has of course been rectified so we'll see what I'll get at the next fill-up)...

yea i always get between 25-30 mpg. never once gotten lower than 25 mpg out of a tank. i also do a mix of city/highway, and also get on it a little from time to time.

the last tank was probably the worst cause i installed the ingalls damper and kept revving it to see how loud it was. then i'd go home mess with something on it then go back out and floor it.

Little over 1K miles on my 07, and i consitantly get 30 MPG , and have yet to hear any squeaks.. guess i need to turn the ipod down a little to hear them maybe.

Either way. It's a great car, that is fun as hell to drive.

I've started to develop a squeak in my radio cover. It's annoying, but isn't there all the time. Whatever.

it depends, but usually, it would affect it for the worse

I would imagine lighter 17" wheels would probably save a little gas, but I'm not sure of what other parts could actually save you gas.

I think in the last few years, these EPA estimates are supposed to be more realistic on what the normal driver of that car may achieve rather than what the max MPG it can obtain. There are a number of ppl here that occasionally get over 30MPG..... but most dont.

Just did a 2075 mile round trip. 5speed '06. Car FULLY loaded (butt dragging), average speed 80mph, sometimes uh... higher. One tank was flat out through twisty mountain roads (FUN!!!), all other tanks were on highway, never took it easy. Average mpg for the trip: 28.36

When I drive on a flat road at 70mph with cruise control on, I get 31.5 Note, my tires are inflated to the "over 100mph" pressures as specified in the manual.

I get or exceed EPA mileage. The kids should have bought a Civic for better gas mileage.. Which would you rather have, 128 horsepower or 161?

I'm not sure what exactly you are saying. Are you saying it saves gas to engine brake? That doesn't work, but I believe you are trying to say something else...not sure

Depends. What kind of driving are you doing? You have lots of extra weight, bigger wheels, big city stop and go driving, low tire pressure, and lots of short trips that dont allow your car to warm up? All of those things can lower mileage. Your car will also get lower mileage as it breaks itself in up to 4-5k miles.

compared to coasting in neutral or staying on the throttle and just braking later, yes, it does

well if you stay on the throttle then yes you will use gas but if you cost, downshift or just let go of the throttle it will not use any less gas..
