Default Another tC accident...airbags didn't deploy

Bryan (tc_maniac) asked me to post this on his behalf. He had an accident recently and sent me some pictures of his tC ....
According to Bryan he was going pretty fast on a curve (turning slightly left) when his left wheel dived into a dip (pot hole?) and he lost control. The front left part of the car impacted a hill, his car did a 360 turn and the front impacted a hill directly, again. No airbags (not even the knee airbag) went off. Lets not make any assumptions but instead leave our condolences for his tC. BTW he is ok, except for some pain in the neck.
Bryan, hope you can finally get ur 5-speed now! Good Luck man!

Yes, I remember one guy's going off. I think he had the first thread about a tC accident. Crashed into a tree I think. If the search was any good I'd find it...

He doesn't know yet. I'd say it could go either way. I'll update everyone if he lets me know...

Airbags will not come out according to speed. It is the rate of speed reduction that make airbags go off. Glad to hear he is ok.

I hope you are all right. Property can always be replaced so dont beat yourself up over the loss of the car...

I think everyone should take note on this and be safe out there. I own a tC and sometimes I push her too, I think we all need to realize that some things are out of our control and that we need to be careful driving, the tC as fun as it is is still a motor vehicle, not a toy.

For those who are concerned with the airbags, please be aware that the scion airbags do not function under low speeds. The computer detects the speed of impact and deploys the airbag, this does not demonstrate a fault in the system. If it were too sensitive you would have airbags going off at parking lots over minor bumper bumper accidents.

That is very close to a total loss.

Some insurance companies are very cheap though and will attempt to save the 'total'.

I don't like the idea of a computer determining if it should deploy the airbags based on the speed reduction of your car. What if you are at high speed and go into a spin or what if your car leaves the ground? The speedometer will be reporting highly inaccurate speed changes. A pressure sensor makes more sense.

Hi i'm bryan! thx to everybody wishing me luck. i don't know much about posting things on pc so i had russian tc post it for me! thx alot! i just came to US half a year ago, so if i wrote anything u guys don't understand, please let me know, gives me oppertunity to improve my english ^_^`
i was making the turn at about 70mph and did a 360, after that i believe i crashed not at a very fast speed. So i think the airbag was operating normally. But i wanna how the knee airbags works... do they pop out at a certain speed as head airbags do??

Everyone needs to realize that the airbags NOT going off was a good thing in this case. An airbag deployment is a VERY VIOLENT thing, and not something that you want to be around. If you can have an accident like that one, and walk away with nothing but a sore neck, you've done wonderfully.

tc_maniac - sorry about your car, and I'm glad that you are OK.

The car's safety features (crumple zones, reinforced passenger compartment, airbags) functioned exactly as they were supposed to, and that's why he walked away.

thats not bad, it was a curve not a 90 degree turn. I go around some at 80, it just depends on the turn, and the car.

as you you, did you come from mother russia as well?

Your airbags usually only deploy when you hit head on...I believe there are sensors there. That sucks about your tC

It appears that the crumple zones work well on all Scions,
at least from the pictures I've seen.

The main thing is to protect the passenger area. Sounds like your doing OK.

Good luck in the future.
