And not at glancing angles, or angles at all.

At least the owner is not seriously injured, and another tC can always be bought.

tc_maniac - sorry about your car, and I'm glad that you are OK.

The car's safety features (crumple zones, reinforced passenger compartment, airbags) functioned exactly as they were supposed to, and that's why he walked away.

LATER

thank you!

the airbag stuff works on G-forces. its complicated to explain but as long as the driver walks away its all good
cars are replaceable lives arent

sort of off topic
mercedes benz's CLK-GTR race car and road car (most expensive car in the world) has an airbag for the race car too. a car racing industry first

Glad he's alright! Listen, I really am sorry, and my condolences go out to him and his family, but if he's parting out the car, let me know, Im interested in the driver's side headrest, and the glove box.

Looking at the picture, the hood is in PERFECT condition, this shows that the impact was not direct and was most probably a glance off the bumper, causing it to rip off. The angle of impact would have been from a side (he said he spun 360, so he probably hit something while spinning) Since it was not a frontal hit, the airbags did not go off.

Airbags use accelerometers, not the speedometer. If they detect a G force above a certain threshold (12 Gs in some cars, 20 Gs in others) they go off. The impact of the airbag hitting your body (assuming you DON'T have your seatbelt on) is about 20 Gs, which is enough to kill a small child. Not fun.

Of course, hitting the dashboard in a car that was a highway speed and hit an immobile object with no seat belt is about a 200 G impact.

I don't know what the threshold specifically in the tC is, but considering the distance from the horn button to the driver's chest is relatively low in the tC I bet its around 20Gs.

If he hit the rear first then why would the airbags go off. It's normal for them to not go off in some instances. Like it was stated before... it's not spped that deploys the airbags... it's the deceleration plus it should be a front hit

If you want to know more.... Go ask your local scion dealership service dept. They'd be glad to answer your questions.

Only your insurance company can tell you if the car is totaled after being evaluated at a repair shop.

from my experience the pics and the story support each other. from them, i will say that the air bags should not have deployed at all...

hope the passangers are ok.

i won't condole you as it is a drivers error accident.

glad that your friend is ok.

[quote="scion_tC"]For those who are concerned with the airbags, please be aware that the scion airbags do not function under low speeds. quote]

Fact airbags will not deploy at speeds 15mph or less. His airbage didn't deploy b/c the location of the crash sensors. His front bumper doesn't look bent. The bumper cover is gone. This is why his airbags didn't go off.. When he hit the hill his car probally bounced up. Airbags will deploy in a head on crash with something like a car, tree, wall etc. For airbags to deploy it almost has to go from 20 or greater down to 0 in a matter of a few seconds.

I don't know anything about knee airbags or side airbags. Just front ones. I will ask some of my fellow auto techs.

You see my point though! It has to have a very abrupt stop.

http://www.hwysafety.org/safety_fact.../airbags.htm#5
5. How serious does a crash have to be for a frontal airbag to inflate? Most frontal airbags are designed to inflate in crashes equivalent to hitting a solid barrier at 10-12 mph. Some manufacturers use different inflation thresholds depending on whether people are using their safety belts. Thresholds of 10-12 mph are typically used for unbelted occupants, but thresholds are higher -- about 16 mph -- for people with belts because the belts alone are likely to provide adequate protection up to these moderate speeds.
