Default Any1 elses catalytic converter smelly already?

*Move this if it's in the wrong area*

I've got just under 15k on my car and about 3 months/4k miles ago my cat started to stink! I am a pretty aggresive driver so that is most likely the cause of the early failure of the cat. I'm going to by-pass it by slipping exhaust piping thru it and see if that works well. If not I've got to foot buying a new cat! How fun! Anyhow, just thought I'd see if anyone else has this problem or if it's just my driving antics...

toyota/scion knows of this problem and have issued a technical service bulletin with an updated converter that puts out less sulfur. it doesn't look like the converter failed, but it happens (according to the bulletin) when heavy acceleration or stop/go traffic happens.. don't bypass the converter.. make the deaker replace it.. (for free) since they know the part has gone bad!!

the dealer will try to tell you to use a different fuel, but the fact is the converter that's on there has an updated part.. I'd make them replace it..

the tsb is EG032-05 titled "Excessive Sulfur Dioxide Odor" posted Aug 1, 2005

THANKS! I thought of looking around to see about that. Are they required to replace it? Where can I find a complete list of the Service Bulletin's? Thanks again.

my cat's been smelling since I've had the car. I didn't really break it in, because I'm in the "drive it how you're gonna drive it" camp. I'm gonna report the problem at my first oil change..about 1200mi away. if they say anything, I'll reference this thread and the TSB.

i have the service bulletin (couple of them) there are only like 8 or 9 for the tC..but nowhere to host it.. so i can email you a copy of that bulletin unless someone wants to host them.. PM me and i'll email you a copy..

well they should be replacing it, especially if you complain about the smell.. but of course any dealer can give tons of excuses! If that's the case just find another dealer who would be nice and replace it.. Plus since there's a bulletin on it, that's showing that all those cars might NOT be in EPA compliance, so yeah they could be getting into trouble with the EPA.. but required to replace it? Only if you have the symptoms which you definitely do.. my dealer would be nice and just say "yeah we'll order you that part"..

would make sense you'd smell it more, with the heat on.. definitely open a window to vent the odor, until you get it fixed (converter replaced).. don't need ya getting sick!!

It is a big deal cuz I don't need people knowing my tC as the rotten egg one. And yes, My tc has the issue too.

Do a search. Complete listing of TSB's.

Also, every place who does official work for emissions purposes are federally mandated to replace the Catalytic Converter if it fails within 8 years/80,000 miles free of charge, because they are designed to last the life of the vehicle. That only pertains to 95 and newer vehicles.
The outlines of it can be found in
