Honestly this just seems a little excessive to me. It is just another business trying to suck dumb consumers into buying something they really don't need, trying to sell peace of mind.

but some people might like it i guess.

I was reading about systems like this, and it does offer very similar service as lojack. I think the major differences are that it is not a passive system. The one I read about lets you log on the company website, and you can track your car (ie. make sure it's still in the parking lot...a bit paranoid, but still cool), whereas lojack does not activate until you call the police. It uses GPS technology, as opposed to triangulated radio signals via towers. Apparently, some of them can become quite complex, utilizing features from the OnStar system, such as remote vehicle entry, directions, etc. I don't recall which service I read about, but the alarm system will even notify if your door panel is struck or dinged, depending on the sensitivity. If I had the money I'd do it, but the initial cost, and the monthly fee would make it rough for me....however, I'll bet you could get insurance rates pretty far down.

*edit* Oh yeah, and the one I read about is trying to come up with an ODBII interface so you can log your car's performance and diagnose issues...

It's not excessive when you live in a place with prolific and sophisticated car theft. We have a problem with bandit tow trucks in L.A.; these aren't your typical "smash and grab" jobs, they will steal your car with a tow truck in plain view off the street, and typically in nicer neighborhoods.
