Default automatic question?

ok while im driving.. and the gear is in drive...u can push the gear up to neutral...hmm sounds normal...but if u try to push to the reverse then it also works...sounds weird...and if u go all the way too park..the car jerks back and fourth like a rollercoaster.....sound weird?

and yes this is without my foot being on the break at all...

is this suppose to happen??

come on Scion....i mean i already had an issue with my little brother trying to open the door while it was locked.(driving)..and apparently it opens...i know alot of coupes do this but i think its pretty stupid

Can't believe anyone who would ever want to do that... Trying to change gears like that without using the brakes, would most likely do damage to the transmission. That sound is probably damage being done...?

why would you be trying to put it into park while moving? thats probably a good way to blow out the transmission fast.

i must be missing something. are you suggesting that you shouldn't be able to force the transmission into the wrong gear? just because you "can" do something doesn't mean you "should".

toyota really can't be held responsible for not "idiot proofing" the car (that term is not used to insinuate you are an idiot...it is a common term used by manufacturers to describe preventative actions they take to try and prevent injury or damage because of the missteps of the lowest common denominator among us). obviously, they try and anticipate how the car will be misused and warn people not to do so, but imo, obviously every possible contingency cannot be covered.

i assume you know better than to throw the car in reverse or park while moving forward even though you could do so.

it reminds me of a story of a "safety label" that was on a wooden ladder that kind of went over the top imo...beyond the "don't stand on the top step you might fall", it also read, "don't grind this ladder into sawdust and consume it".

help me out, what am i missing here?
btw, i'd definitely remind your brother again not to open the door when you're driving.

Im guessing that this will someday be on a warning label that does not come off the shifter. "DO NOT SHIFT INTO R OR P WHILE MOVING FORWARD"

My friends car has a huge label about pushing the brake pedal to shift out of park. Its not a sticker either. First thing I asked him was why didnt you pull that off as soon as you bought the car.

gotcha. i just misunderstood what you were saying....from neutral you can choose to shift to drive, reverse or park. it's normal. if you are moving at all, shifting to park will cause the car to lurch back and forth a bit.
obviously, when you are moving in either direction it's best not to shift to the opposite direction or park while still moving.

If you're going to complain about your tC, you should sell it. Why you would do what you did is beyond me. If you re-read your post, you will see that it looks like you're talking about the sound(s) your tC is making during your 'experiment'. (ex."sounds normal", "sounds weird"x2) So you can see why peeps are writing about the sound(s) your tC is making. I'm not trying to teach you grammar here. Just making an observation is all.

BTW-its a "brake" not a "break".

Why would you even try that experiment??? I can't even imagine myself putting a car in R or P while it is moving like at all... But it's your car I guess, hopfully you have enough common sense not to do that often. And btw, if you want to have fun with the tranny, shouldv'e gotten a stick .

wow. that's freaking insane!! this may be the dumbest post ever, but I must admit, it is very entertaining right about now. hey, why don't you also try going over a speed bump at 80 mph, maybe your suspension will make some new noises as well.

i don't think that was necessary

he was just stating what he noticed, you don't have to be a dick about it.

Problem exists between seat and steering wheel.

Moving the gear selector to Park while moving should not even be attempted in the first place. The functionality is likely there for emergency stops. Just curious, did you parents pay for the car?

OK, in my 02 camry i can shift from D to N with just a push and from R to N to D with just a push, but to go from R to P or from N to R i need the break.

i'm not being critical, but come on, driving a car is not rocket science. a transmission is obviously not made to be shifted into reverse while you are still driving at any speed above rolling idle. these posts boggle me. it's almost like people are trying to find new things to complain about........for example -( hey, I opened my hatchback after it rained and rain water fell into my trunk area.....the tc is a piece of crap!! ) this post seems to me to be along those same lines.........any car will, in his own words - buck like a rollercoaster - when it is abused. car manufacturers invented extended warranties and I have to pay higher insurance because of people like this.
