In the old days when u had push button shifters and a straightaway on the shift sequence u had to press the push button in order to move it from neutral to reverse.
Since this is a gated shifter it shouldnt pop from neutral to reverse easily.
Still, when I test drove the tc i felt that the gated shifter was very loose, and required little effort to get into gear. I wouldnt mind it requiring a little more effort.

I used to do what you are talking about (by the way, never do a neutral drop burn out) in an auto, and now I own a manual. You are a manual driver at heart, I tell ya. I didn't believe it until I switched.

Your joking, if you do a neutral start at anything above idle into drive...you freak up your transmission and it gives u the sickest lurch and then sick feeling because of the lurch in the world.
Its much safer to be in drive with the parking brake on and thenthrow some gas and release.

I think everyone's missing the point.
Lets break everything down, shall we?
First off, the original poster stated what he observed while driving. Or at least is seemed that way. Then stated it was while parked. So I'll post accordingly.
As a safety feature, a car should not be able to shift from a drive gear into reverse unless the brake is pressed.
It can very well shift from a drive gear into neutral. But no further! Again as a saftey feature - better to blow an engine than be out of control with a stuck gas pedal.
If this happened while parked in his friend's car, might be normal as his friend might have just had his foot on the brake.
If it was while driving, and shifting to reverse, the car would have just stalled. With some tranny damage. Maybe.
As said before you can very easily go straight from reverse to drive without pressing the brake or the button on the shifter.
The bottom line is: You shouldn't be able to push the shifter from drive or neutral into reverse without braking. Whether intentional or not.
The original poster was just obersving and than hypothesizing. That's all.
Everyone get off his back.

I shift into reverse from neutral without hitting the brake.... i'm fine with it.... it's not like you have to hit a clutch or anything, and the way the shifter is gated means you have to push to the side and THEN up to shift into R... it's not something that'll happen by accident so there shouldn't be a problem with it.
This reminds me of the time I was driving my first car, an old 1986 Thunderbird. I was going about 50mph in a long straight area and for whatever reason I shifted to neutral. Or at least I was trying to shift to neutral. It went way past that all the way to reverse.
Yes, that's right, 50mph and I throw the sucker into full on reverse. Thankfully it was a straight stretch of road, so all it did was lock up everything and skid straight. It made the most awful screeching sound you can imagine for a couple seconds until I could put it back in drive. Aside from the long rubber marks on the pavement from the car skidding after the wheels locked, there was only the odd smell of rubber and the memory of the sound in my head. Oddly enough, over the next few months the transmission decided to start leaking and eventually had to be totally redone. Go figure.
In case you're wondering, yes, my next car was a stick, and so is my tC now.
