At WOT, the engine should pull almost to redline before it shifts no matter what. So leaving it in the lower gears until you want to shift will have no added benefit when gunning it. If anything, there will be a slightly longer delay in shifting because the tcm needs time to figure out what you're actually doing with the shift lever. Whereas by letting the auto do its job, it will shift precisely, and on time.

Stop trying to be analytical when answering these questions, most of these questions that are answered because you make up the scenario in your head doesnt mean it happens that way, for the ECU to figure out "what your doing" takes a fraction of a second. Moving up in gears from L-2-3-D or whatever it is on an automatic tC will make it go a bit faster beacuse you stay in the gear longer. I raced my friends Mitsu Galant at the race track, mind you its a slow a$$ car and just letting the ECU change on its own made the car shift at the crappiest points, when I made it shift I moved the shift level just a few hundred RPMS before redline, then it would actually change at redline. It killed a tenth of a second or two doing this.

If you have fun and do this occasionally... fine... but if you find yourself doing it all of the time, you bought the wrong car. Go get a 5spd.

Yes, this is BAD. Pretty sure the car's transmission parts don't get the same lubrication they need when they are in a drive gear.

Besides, the manual says not to do it.

I've taken my old car to the track. It was a 1997 Dodge Stratus w/ the Autostick tiptronic shifting. It was no speed demon, but my times were always faster by several 10ths with the auto shifting itself (16.3-16.4). There must be something wrong with your transmission, because at wot the tcm is programmed to shift around 6100rpm. It should do this consistently, and it will almost always be more efficient than "rowing" through the gears on your own. Like I just said, a properly function auto should hold the gears till redline whn you mash the pedal. Hell, the tcm even has a safety so if you try leaving it in a certain gear too long it will automatically shift into the next gear so you don't damage your engine or transmission. There really isn't a point to doing it. And I'm speaking from experience with my own car that had tiptronic shifting, which in all technicalities should be even more efficient than your regular automatic transmission.

Like the others said. Just get the 5spd if you want to shift.

but what about if i only do the auto shifting once in a while?
i prefer the confort of driving the auto, but sometimes i race (only once in a while, like once every two weeks).
do you think that the Scion tC could be get the tiptronic in the future for the Auto tC?

I concur with the last few posts - buy a stick. The clutch won't bite you

tell your friend he bought the wrong car. get a 5 speed and beat the crap out of the redline before shifting gears. i have a C27A4 accord auto and manual shifted it at the track, did a merely 14.5 seconds while going auto was about 15.7 seconds on a 1/4 considering the weight of the engine.

1- If you tranny shifts to redline on its own, you will not be faster than shifting yourself. One tenth in the 1/4 can be attributed to a 5mph headwind.

2- You're still fighting a power-sapping torque converter, using too-tall gears not designed for max acceleration. A double whammy.

3- Just bring the car in, and trade it for a 5-speed. Its the best power mod you can do at this point.

I have the 97 C27a and I guess they're the hardest car to mod when it comes to getting parts.
