with a mit or wash cloth...top to bottom, in case there is grit on the bottom portion of the car....and never ever ever ever ever use the car washes brush and never go through the auto. carwashes that arent brushless.....hmm and make sure youwash the underbody to prevent rust.....
but i'm assuming you want to know more about the products...hmm..no specific types for me...McGuires compounds are the best...and i've found that Eagle's Nanowax work pretty good...

I live in Chicago so snow is a huge problem. Especially with all the salt that is thrown on the road. I just take my car to a hand car wash. There's a lot of good ones in the burbs but make sure they have a good reputation. And none of those drive thru brush or bristle car washes either.
When your car is really dirty (as when you drive in snow or weather conditions), I recommend the following:
1) Fill a large bucket soap an water - use automotive car soap...Mothers or Maguires, etc.
2) First completely hosed down the car. I recommend using a nozzle so you can hit some of the dirtier areas with some water under pressure. Shoot the nozzle spray up under the wheel wells to rinse out debrit and/or salt deposite, gritt, etc.
3) Take a clean wash mitt, dunk it and soak it in your soap bucket and start washing from the top down. Do not wash in circular motion but wipe back and forth, front to back. In this way you avoid putting swirls in your paint and if you do they will run inline with the car.
4) Keep the hose handy and before you dip it back in the bucket for more soapy water, give the mitt a quick rinse with the hose. This will knock any large grit/debri from the mitt before you put it in the soap bucket and contin ue washing
5) Once you have washed down the car (again top to bottom for the reasons stated by an earlier poster), Thorouchly rinse the car down with your hose noizzle, top to bottom.
6) Once done rinsing the car, dump you bucket and thoroughly rinse your wash mitt. If you have a second mitt, use that one for the final wash. I keep two handy for just such occasions.
7) Now refill your bucket with fresh automotive soap and water.
Wash the car again (front to back - top to bottom with NO circular motions). Rinse the car one final time and dry off, again top to bottom, with a shammy or clean cotton towel. As when you washed it, dry it without wiping it in circular motions.
It takes some time but will p[reserve your paint finish and avoid intoruding scratches/swirls due to grit, salt, and debrit.
Cheers!

when its rained/snowed and you get that grime on the sides and back, the auto carwashes and even handheld high pressure system wont get it clean...it'll knock off loose dirt, but as soon as it dries, you'll see the same grime(less noticeable, and no its not water spots)...imo, only a mit/cloth wash like the process listed above works when ever its rained hard.
Most of the time I just fill a bucket of water, and bring two microfiber rags down with me (I live in an apt w/o hose access)... and I use one to wet and clean, the other to dry as I go.
Every once in a while I take my car to my parents' house to wash the underbody with the hose, and to give the car a proper cleaning with soap and water... whatever soap they happen to have, although lately it's been the Rain-X wash and wax with carnuba beads... works really well if you ask me.
I also take the time to get under the car and clean the whole undercarriage (nice having the parents' driveway), and I clean off the whole engine compartment with a paint brush and dry cloth.
Then Rain-X on all windows and exterior mirrors... and with the tC... even the ROOF!.
