Default Cold Weather Affecting Hatch Struts?

I have noticed that lately, my hatch hasn't been going all the way up. When I open it, the struts only push the hatch up about half way, then I have to physically lift the hatch the rest of the way up. It stays up when I do that, but it is kind of annoying having to do that every time I want something out of the back.

It has been chilly here lately (around the 10-30F range). I don't know if the cold is causing this problem or if it is the struts. Let me know what you think. Thanks

Yup, same problem here. I think we are going to have the dealer swap them out. I just really, really hate having them touch the car at all. They seem to mess something up every time.

yea, that will happen. Even New struts will be affected by the cold. That is just the way it is. The oil in the struts has to be thin enough so that the hatch will move, and because of this the vescosity of the oil changes with temperature. It happens to your engine oil, tranny oil, even the oil in your suspension. Such is life.

My Passat Trunk and Hood did that as well... It's part of the physics of the oil with the cold, like stated above....

If they were to make them strong enough to function as needed at 0 degrees, they'd be way too strong at 80-90... so it's best for them to comprimise and focus good function at a median temperature...

And forcing us to lift a bit at temperatures nearing 0.
