Default In depth analysis of some of the accessories available

When I ordered my Scion, I picked up all sorts of little accessories. I thought I would comment on them.

Lip Spoiler:
This really accentuates the car nicely. It isn't ricey at all, and instead, gives it a very Euro sport look to the vehicle. It does not impare vision at all and snugs the car well. It's pricey, and for something that small... I'm not sure if it is worth it. Personally, I think this is one of those things that you are better off ordering yourself for cheaper and then installing at a friend's shop or do it yourself. I had the factory do it, and I love it.

Floor Mats:
The floor mats are really nice. Again, these are sport coupe-inspired. They snap into the floor and stay in place, yet, aren't hard to take out and clean. I would personally prefer to have ones with silver trim on the edges to accentuate the interior better, but these are good quality mats, nonetheless.

Upgraded Security:
This was the only upgrade I was really somewhat unhappy about. I should have done more homework on this before getting it. Don't get me wrong, I would have gotten it anyway, but I think alot of people don't understand exactly what the security does. The security is to deter break-ins. Nothing more. The car already comes with an engine immobilizer. The only thing I was upset about is for 400+ bucks, I would expect something that at least chirped, honked the horn or something when I armed or disarmed it. Nope. It's completely silent. The only indication you have of arming or disarming is a visual indication via the lights on the car. Not very useful during the day. It does add a small square to the botom and left of the steering wheel where the MIC (for picking up sound) and red security light go. The red LED is very bright and it flashes inside the car when it is armed. There is also a small sticker in the corner of each window that says, "SCION SECURITY". Again, I would have gotten it with or without the chirp, but for that much money... I think it needs to have an audible indication that it is on or off.

Auto-Dimming Mirror:
This is so awesome. I had my car for a couple of days before any accessories came in so I got to drive it around with the stock mirror. This mirror just gives the car a very luxurious and expensive feel to it. It has 3 homelink memory buttons, a kickass map light (very kickass map light), and another button that toggles the auto-dim on or off. When on, there is a green led that lights in the mirror.

Upgraded 6-Disc Stereo:
Let's face it... the only difference between the stock stereo and the 6-disc stereo is the various colored lights that illuminate the head unit. I think there are about 10 colors, but the coolest feature is the "Mixer" Color that actually cycles through all the colors slowly. At night, this kicks butt! The other difference, obviously, is having 6 CDs in the unit. All the CDs fit in the head unit which is just awesome! No need to add hardware to the glove box. I'm averaging about 120 songs per CD... and with 6 CDs, this comes out to 720 songs. You do the math I basically have 48 hours of musc in my head unit... and never have to listen to the same song twice or hear a commercial. Awesome.

Sub Woofer:
I was skeptical about getting this add-on. Alot of people were telling me "bazooka sucks" and blah blah blah. But you know what? This thing is amazing, but not for the reasons many would think. This thing is literally tucked away in the corner of the trunk. I've never seen something so small and compact kick out this much thump. I'm not a big audio enthusiast by any means, but I'm extremely happy with this purchase. On the stereo, I currently have the Base set to -5 with the Treble set to +5 and even then... the base is still pumping out! I can feel it in my chest and my hair vibrates... which is more than enough for me. I'd also like to note.... nothing in the car rattles! I love it. All that cargo room, and I add a kicker, and I don't even notice it is there, really. Amazing product. Unless you are a hardcore audio guy who just has to have earth-shattering base at almost illegal levels... I see no reason not to get the sub-woofer. I'm very very happy with it. With the windows down and top wide open... cruising the highway at 80... I can crank the stereo and the trebs are very crisp, clear, loud, and audible.. and the base is just deep and thumping... I can feel it in my seat. That is plenty for me. The stereo and sub is expensive, but I love it. If you had to chose, though... I'd get the sub instead of the upgraded stereo... but that is just me.

Cargo Net/ Cargo Mat:
Okay.. this is where I wish someone would have filled me in. IF you do get the subwoofer, then the cargo net can't connect one of the 4 hooks. Basically, the sub covers up one of the connection hooks (the bottom one) on the right side. I'm sure there is a "rigged" way around this, but I haven't had too much time to play with it. The cargo net is top-quality, though. I just need to figure out how to get it hooked on. The cargo mat is also very nice. I do IT work and so I tend to have lots of computer stuff in my car while I'm working. The mat is very large and it allows me to not worry about dust, dirt, and stuff messing up my trunk. I like it alot. I just need to find a way to connect that last hook... hmm....

Racing Pedals:
These are on back order... no comments.

Blue LED Lights:
This was also on back order... no comments... yet.

I'll try to get some much requested pics done this weekend. I'll definitely be taking pictures of the lights (without a flash) so people can see; including rear, parking, reverse, etc. I'll also be taking pics of the stereo at night. My girlfriend said it best, "Wow! This car is so much fun. It feels like I'm riding in a 30k luxury sports car!" I couldn't agree more. By the way... before anyone thinks we are just kids going gahgah over "kiddy" stuff... I'm 28. This car is unbelievable. I'll also be putting in my graphite Momo shifter **** from my old car. It is gray/black graphite and will look amazing. I'll get pics of that as well.

My thoughts exactly!!! It would be nice if there was an audible indication when the alarm is armed or disarmed. Also, if the alarm is set off your horn goes off and lights flash when I expected a normal alarm siren. It works, it was just not what I expected for $469. But, I didn't put the "Scion Security" stickers on my windows because I figured it would be better not to tell any potential theives what kind of alarm they would have to deal with if they break in my car. You never know, they may know how to quickly disarm certain alarms so I'd rather keep them guessing. -Jayme

OOOOHHHH!

A few more tasty morsels:

The auto-dim mirror has various colors you can choose from (much like the upgraded stereo). And yes, blue is one of them.

Also, you can program your upgraded security through a series of events like opening/closing doors, inserting/removing keys, and locking/unlocking doors in a particular order a number of particular times. I like that.

Wow... that's really good to know. They install the add-ons at the dealership right? I think my tc is probably still on a boat in the Pacific right now, heh, so that means I'll have time to cancel the security system before it arrives.

I totally wanted the chirps and audible signals to let me know the alarm is on. Hopefully getting aftermarket stuff works well / better. This is my first car.

I too have the 6 disc changer and sub. When you hit the SSP button do you even have tC as an option or just the xA and xB. If so which is yours set to.

The dealer made it a point to tell me about it but they don't seem to understand how to do it. I know the tC has a six speaker system but I don't think I'm even getting to use all six.

Just curious

If you hit the SSP and it gives you "xA" or "xB" as the options, then something tells me it isn't installed correctly. When I hit SSP, the options I have are:

1) Neutral (very bland sounding)
2) Hear (much crisper and louder)
3) Feel (much like 2, but better bass)

I've never seen xA or xB show up when I hit any buttons.

The stock unit already have the capability to play MP3 cds, right? Why get a 6cd changer, then?

Also, does the auto-dim mirror have a built-in digital compass? If not, I'd wait for one that does

Hold down the SSP button for about 5-10 seconds. The stock stereo has settings for xA, and xB.. but tC? who knows use the volume buttons to change the xA/xB/tC(?) after holding the SSP button

yes it has a "tC" setting. It sounds very weak actually, as does xB. Not sure how useful it is. I keep mine on the xA setting, as it gives the best bass and loudness possible. If you look in the Pioneer manual (which i don't have on me at the moment) it should tell you what those settings mean.

Does anybody know if the factory Bazooka kit will work with aftermarket head units?

From the pictures I've seen, I really like how it's custom-fit in the rear cargo area.

I've got a 2005 xA and have the security option. It has an audible confirmation (beep) of arm/disarm. This is indeed the OEM alarm with the OEM Scion covers, and not a dealer added aftermarket unit. . . maybe there is a way it can be turned on or off? I don't understand why the tC doesn't have it. . .

Actually it does not. It comes with the alarm. I agree with you on the chirp though. The xB doesnt either.

Default thanks for the mirror and system review...

Yeah, I avoided the security system with an eye to getting lojack instead. It costs a few bills more, but will at least give you a fighting chance against thieves. Anyone out there know about the insurance difference between lojack and the sec system?

Also, thanks for the info on the auto-dimming mirror. I thought 3 bills was a bit too much for it, but now i'm considering it. Perhaps it will be more palatable if I order it from partznet and install myself, any complex wiring involved? I smell a tech feature....

Thanks also for the info on the changer and sub. I am stepping up big time car-wise (beater 95 taurus to tC) and down system-wise (750 watt JL audio / PPI / Mobile ES to factory upgrades), and welcome the info on the scion system..... (other than yo, dawg, I can't wait to rip out the back seat and put in six 12" w7's powered by a diesel generatorin the passenger seat). btw, I consider the changer a safety option: instead of rummaging around and changing cd's while driving, I can load it up before I leave and concentrate on avoiding other people on the road (who are probably rummaging themselves.....)

oh yeah, and the immobilizer is standard, though somewhat of a misnomer..... nothing will stop a good thief, how about "break-in time extender"?

i'm thinking of getting the mirror too... however i wouldn't recommend you installing the mirror yourself, if you mess up you could end up damaging your windshield, and that's retarded. can anyone clarify or back me up on this?

It seems like it's really simple. Installation is only ~$25, so I doubt it takes more than a few minutes to install and I'm sure all the wiring is right there. I might order one from Partznet after I get my car.

If anyone would like to look over the install directions for the mirror ,send me a email and i will forward a set to you paul@mcgeorgetoyota.com It is not a major install but you do have to run 3 wires down the A pillar to the drivers side kick panel 2pos & 1ground.
The overhead console, left visor , left A pillar trim, left door sill, left kick panel trim have to be removed to do the install. :D
