are you referring to the Valve cover? or the entire head? or that cheap plastic Valve cover .. cover?

For the Valve Cover or the Head it self you would need to remove it, use degreaser and then use high temp engine paint. Seems like a lot of work for something pointless and dumb.

the cheap plastic? Remove it, clean with degreaser soap and water, then some high temp plastic spray paint

plastic cover will be ok with the spray paint, but for the actual valve cover you have to remove all the bolts and gasket, sand blasting it and powder coating would be the best method

It's not dumb in certain circumstances. I have a motor I'm building and will be dropping in ~ March. it's a used block though and has the nasty white powder crap that's on old aluminum engines. I want to clean it up and paint it before installing it, a basic gloss or flat black will do. Right now I was thinking clean, degrease, walnut shell blast in open air then paint with high-temp rattle can engine paint.

I'm debating if I should paint the valve cover, head and short block seperate while the're disassembles or wait until it's all back together. Disassembled would be easier to work with but then the bolts wouldn't match.
