I haven't had the problem, but then I have a habit of shifting to second before I shift to first anyway.

i have manual, lets just say from a stop sign, im completely stopped, left foot down all the way, first gear in (but kinda sticks half way) so i have to use more strength to get it in, BUT if i put the clutch down and like wait a second and a half, THEN try to put it in gear, it goes in fine, so it seems like the clutch has a lag or delay in disengaging i guess... iono, someone help me out here, if this is not normal, as far as breaking in the car, im gonna need to go to the dealership

you have a lockout that wont let you put it in first gear if its rolling or still moving. it may seem like you're not moving a lot of the time this happens, but you still are. all modern cars i think have this now so you dont F up your transmission by misshifting and throwing it in first instead of third. i hope this helps

As long as I'm going less than 10mph, I have no trouble downshifting into 1st gear. If you're still breaking it in, it'll get easier. I've got 5,600 miles and it downshifts like butter.

Me too....actually just hit 5600 this morning ;)

But yeah, I have no problems down shifting or taking off in 1st...unless I don't give it any gas ;)

I've noticed that even with only 150 miles, mine shifts very smoothly, though I'm sure it will still loosen up. So far I'm very impressed with the shifter feel, even coming from a 2002 Civic Si which had a great shifter feel.

Ok, I've learned it from somewhere else:

As long as your car is moving, never put it in 1st gear, it is bad for your car, especially from high speed to a rolling stop.

2nd gear can be used at even 5 mph. Downshift from high gears into 1st is a bad habit, I know someone blown his S2000 engine while doing a downshifting...

How did that happen, I'm not sure, but his rich dad only allow him to drive a BMW 330i auto now, as a "punishment".

Who would shift into 1st from a high gear? Besides the tranny wouldn't allow it. And as long as you're going less than say 10mph, how is it bad for your car? By that one would think downshifting in general is bad. Lugging your engine too much by starting in 2nd gear all the time is bad.

I too had this problem when I first got my car. I'm at about 650 miles now and the shifter has gotten a *lot* smoother - buttery! That, and I'm also probably getting more used to the car (and the car is getting more used to me...!)

Syncros will allow shifting into first at low speed, that's what they're there for. But......I think he's talking about putting it in first from a dead stop. I've had trouble with this on some occasions. I've had to go back to netural and try again. This can be a little annoying.

I've had a few of my guests mention something like this....

If you are having trouble getting into 1st before rolling away from a stop, put it into neutral, down into 2nd and then straight up into first without pause. There has been nothing released by Toyota as far as a service bulletin and I have noticed this on other manual transmission cars as well, not just the xB. Hope this helps!

^ same here. My auto shop teacher said that when you are at the light row through the gears backwards(5-4-3-2-1) and this will align the gears

Yes, I think this is a syncro issue for sure. When you come quickly down through the gears and make a full stop then try to go directly to first the syncro is trying to slowdown to the engine RPM to let you put it in gear. When you hold down the clutch for a bit and then try the syncro has had time to slown down. I think this happens to me when I use 2nd to engine brake and then go right to 1st to make a quick take off.

First gear ____es me off too, but not because its hard to get into, but more because of how short it is... argh... people are up my bumper all the time... but Ive figured out how to counter that... just give it a little more rev in first to get some distance from the person behind me, then pop it inot second.

i've never had it hard to get into.

however, twice, i took off like normal in first, when i hit 3000 rpm, i went to shift into 2nd, when i pressed the clutch in, it pushed the stick out of first, shook the car and made a loud thump. i guess it wasn't totally in gear or something. who knows

1st gear is way too short for me also ! Ya just get it rolling and have to shift into 2nd as everybody motors on by. It wouldn't take much of a change to correct and it is a pain. Made me want an automatic until I got used to it.

But the other deal, try and drive someone elses manual scion and compair. If it's obvious that there is a hitch in the thing get it fixed. I wouldn't wait. I'd at least get it looked at and and if the dealer says theres nothing wrong at least you'll have that to fall back on.

The difficulty going into first is a simple one to explain, but a harder one to understand aparently. The gear has a "lock out" type function that keeps you from engaging first gear when the engine is rev'ing, or the car is moving too fast. Push in the clutch the next time your going 30 or so, and "try" to put the car in first gear, your unable to. Next time, When you slow down, roll to a stop from 10 mph or so, push in the clutch, and push the shifter toward first gear as you slow down, and hold it there, it wont go into gear until the car slows down to almost a stop, but if you keep a constant pressure on the shifter, trying to get it into first, you will "feel" through your hand the lock-out disengage, it feels like something rolling out of the way, and then the shifter will pop forward into first. The whole point is to keep you from missing a 2nd to 3rd shift and going from 2nd to 1st by mistake, and over-rev'ing the engine, which i did once in my turbo eclipse a few years ago, and ended stripping the gears, blowing several seals... Not fun.
