Default Free Rev in Cruise Control...

So i "found out" that if the car is in neutral and the cruise is set, when the resume is hit, the car will freely rev untill either it hits and bounces off redline or is some other way canceled (ie - brake, clutch, cancel button or cruise-off).

It scared the crap out of me. When it happened I didn't know what happened and it almost hit redline. You'd think the car would know when it's not in gear and not rev, but then again not much of an issue - i guess.

No real question here, but anyone else know this or have it happen to them.

The only gears it can "tell" is forward or reverse. Otherwise, everything that would tell the car what gear it's in isn't present in a manual. Toyota assumes that the driver would take place of such indicators and sensors.

It's never happened to me but I always assumed that'd be the case.

But I've had my own run-in with the cruise control before too. On a different car, an automatic, I thought the accelerate function was like a gas pedal in your hand so I held it up and the car downshifted twice to meet what it interpreted was my intention.

My old car would do that if you hit the clutch: rev, but stop when it hit like 4-5k (redline is 7) when you had cruise control on. It was a Dodge Avenger.

I didn't try it. I was slowing down so pulled out of gear into neutral. Traffic started up again and I forgot i wasn't in gear and hit resume.

interesting, I never considered this possibility.

However, it sounds perfectly reasonable. In fact, I believe (not quote me on it, though) that cruise control is a relatively recent feature for mass market manual trannies.

Sorry mate, but I had an '87 BMW 325is...5spd w/cruise. That means at least 20 solid years of manual trannies with cruise that I'm aware of :D

My dad's 1983 Datsun 280zx 5spd had cruise control as well. I was shocked when I saw it.
