I know, i know... this'll be another "Hey, I noticed something..." thread and it can be a repost but....

I just noticed that the RPM per MPH is pretty high for the tC. I'm not sure if this will be a good comparison but I also own a 99 stock honda civic M/T and when i get to 65 mph, RPM is at 2500. Well as for the tC, at 65 mph, RPM is at 3000-3200.

Which means that the tC consumes more gas because of this. Of course a civic and a tC are both different cars but it's just a little thing that I found that'll surely affect my gas budget.

 

i know it's not great for gas, but i love 5th gear on the freeway. cruising at 80 mph puts you right in the torque's sweet spot. lay into the pedal to pass and the engine goes >:O

the short gearing is one of the car's most important performance factors. with a normal, long transmission, the camry motor would act alot more like, well, a camry motor. i wouldn't change it except for an additional highway gear.

 

i'm not really complaining about it, it's just a teeny-weeny tid bit that i've noticed.

you're right about being in 5th on the freeway, gives you confidence that you have torque to spare and i do agree if the tC is a six speed.

 

yeah, I keep wishing there was just one more gear to shift to and lessen the rpm rage.

Why does the owner's manual suggest to utilize 4th gear only from 40-45mph?

 

I have no idea about the manual saying 4th 40-45, probably because it's enough oomph after 45 to stay in 4th, and most people doing 45mph+ are probably in a cruising gear.... but 4th gear is my favorite gear, I love doing 60mph hitting a curve with the rpm's in the sweet spot

you're right more rpm's does equal more fuel consumed. The auto at 75 mph is turning about 3,000 rpms.. and as you can find out.. the auto tC gets more mpg's.. i'm averaging about 24 mpg city but it was 26 mpg, since they switched over to the "winter blend" gas it dropped.. (always does that for winter)..

i too had a civic and was getting 35-37 city and 41-45 mpg highway.. do i miss it? naw.. I'm having too much fun with all the torque in the tC's engine!!

 

same here, i can't get that kind of torque from my civic not unless i do a swap with it which i'm hoping to get by next year. for now, i'll have fun with the tC.

 

It definitely consumes more gas then my 1995 honda prelude i thought it would be about the same but the TC takes in more then the honda, rite now im juss tryin to break in my tires....juss got it a couple days ago.....drives nice, friends say its better then the toyota Celica, and more room to move around..... :D

 

How do u guys like ur TC's?

 

Wow, my last car was a Civic also, looks like all the Civic owners go for the tC's... why is that? The gas mileage on the tC is just about the same as it was with the Civic, at least to me.

first.. i went for a tC and not a civic since honda doesn't have anything anywhere near as sporty as the tC anymore! They used to, then they just began to make some really sad civics.. plus honda doesn't have good customer service anymore, their dealerships (at least around where I am) have turned into a joke.. very very bad workmanship.. and honda corporate doesn't even care.. so last time I buy honda!!actually i've gotten better service at a ford dealer (took dad's car in) than at a honda dealer.. Honda is a little too full of themselves lately.. plus their cars are boring..so a lot of us looked at the tC, it's what the civic should've turned into..

secondly.. the mileage on the civic I had was more than the tC.. By 96 they had increased the fuel economy, plus I had the high mileage version, the HX.. getting 37 city and about 42-45 highway..
