I'm sorry but, I think Toyota is taking a big risk with the tC. Scion is supposed to be weird and unique, so what do they do? They make a coupe that looks like an update to the Paseo?

This this has "Toyota" written all over it. It really couldn't be more dull and conventional if they tried. Even the Toyota Celica has more adventurous styling than this.

Shame on them for losing their nerve. They should have had some ***** and build the tC just the way it was SUPPOSED to look. Just like it's prototype, the ccX!



Imagine if they had done the same Toyota boringness injection to the xB and xA. The xB would have looked like a Subaru Forester and the xA would look like a hatchback echo and Scion would have been DOA.

The tC is boring as hell. I like the specifications, but the styling (especially in boring silver) just puts me to sleep.

The Camry Solara coupe has edgier styling than this thing. They might as well call it Camry Jr. and sell it in that beige color every Camry owner gets.

Keep your eyes on the ball Toyota. Don't lose your nerve ALREADY... jesus.

What did they do? Show the ccX to a test panel of 45-60 year olds and get the thumbs down?

Disagree. I think the Scion tC is the best of the 3 by far. I think the lines compared to the Celica (to each their own, I guess). I test drove the Celica (not the GT-S) and the car had no power and the inside was BORING.

Scion will sell a ton of the tCs and due to the low price, people will be able to spend the extra dollars to make their own "lines" with TRD. Just wish I could test drive the tC NOW.

The tC is great, it should be sold as a Toyota.

When you come out with a brand designed to be SEPERATE from the main brand, it's generally not a good idea to make the third model you come out with look just like something from the main brand (duh!)

No one here will look at an xB and say "Toyota!" they will say "WTF?" and ask you what it is.

People will look at the tC and say "Oh, look, Toyota brought back the Paseo or look, that must be the new Celica"

That is exactly the what Toyota was supposed to be trying to avoid with Scion, the who point was to make them not boring and not look like every other Toyota.

The tC is great. Sell it as a Toyota and give us a sports car with UNIQUE styling--- a car that people will look at and say "WTF is that??? or that must be a Scion"

The performance won't "be" good because it's never going to "be" built. They decided to go with the boring ___ tC instead.

I think they could have designed out the "loaded diaper" effect without turning it into a Paseo clone like the tC then we all might have been happy.

I can guarantee you the tC isn't going to turn heads like the other Scions do. No one will whisper and point. No one will ask you what it is. It will generate no more buzz than when a Camry Solara drives by. No one will care, no one will notice.

Sure it will be a great car. A beige Camry is a great car too, but it's not buzzworthy and it looks like everything else on the road, just like the tC does.

and that defeats the whole purpose of Scion brand.

They could have made the tC look like a mini Lamborghini or something, anything. Do something radical for fvcks sake---- wasn't that the whole point of Scion??

The tC looks like another dime-a-dozen Toyota and it's styling makes me yawn as much as your Mom's beige Camry.

 

I agree with most of your points as well. I wlould have loved something colser to the ccX. The current rendition of the tC is plain, clean but without character, and looks like the genetic experiment of some mad scientist combining a camry with superficial DNA from a BMW and A4. Altought this might sound good, it just comes across as dull and uninspired. Very Honda-esque IMO.

Have you seen the tC in person yet? It looks awesome, and I think it's going to be a big success...I like it much more than the ccX.

You know yesterday, I happened to be going on a dealer swap to a Toyota/Mazda/Dodge dealer (yea I know random combination). I happened to see the new Mazda 3 series and RX-8 up close and personal for the first time. I got to tell ya, THAT is what Toyota/Scion needed to come up with. The new 3's come with a 2.3L DOHC motor, that I'd assume puts out close to the HP of the new tC. However, the car is less than 17k to buy and looks cool as hell. Yes, Scion is unique, Scion is different, but the fact of the matter is that Mazda is straight up kickin Scion's ___ in styling. These Scions are great cars, don't get me wrong, they're my bread and butter. However, Mazda's styling is hot and all, but the tC is a simplistic car with simple lines that BEGS to be tuned and played with. Honestly, wait until some body kits have been made, and there are engine mods available, the tC will blow the RSX's, Civic's, Integra's, Tiburon's, Celica's out of the water, end of story.

 

On a side note, check out ls1gto.com forums. When they take the spoiler off of that thing it actually looks pretty good IMO.

GTO seems like a 32k 7 series, not bad at all.

 

Toyota would have been better off strategically by calling it the Corolla Coupe XRS. It's just a natural rival to the Honda Civic

I don't get it. The xB and the xA don't look all that radical to me. When I first saw the xA I thought it was a new Echo hatch. The only thing radical about the xB is its squareness as where most vehicles out there are curvy. The one aspect about them that does stand out though is that they are very clean looking. No extra wings or ground effects or such. The tC fits perfectly with its siblings.

The ccX was very radical looking but also very ugly IMO. Even if some find the tC bore'n I'd rather have it than the ccX.

 

The wierdness to the whole Scion line is something that you dont see. Primarily the pure pricing aspect. The only other choice is Saturn when it comes to no-haggle price. Also the mono-spec of the car and the fact that you can order yours instead of taking the car right out of the lot with full dealer add-ons that you wont need or you can get them cheaper somewhere else.

Toyota is here to make money, ccX will not sell well or at all. I only unique cars that I know off come from Shelby, Panoz, ItalDesign, and other European design houses.

Yeah, the tC is a risk, so is the xA and xB. Every time I see a new accord coupe or Subary legacy from the rear mirror, I see the tC's front end.

 

i agree with everything you said. i also think the ccX is very ugly. its different but its just something i wouldnt drive. i'd choose a tC over the ccX anyday

I wish they had gone with the Scion edginess factor here. They could have easily made this thing look like a poor mans exotic sports car. Steal from the Lotus Elise or the TVR Tuscan or the Maranello for fvcks sake. Did they HAVE to make it look like a 15 yr old Toyota design???

Unique styling would have been the ONE thing that could have made it stand out in the overcrowded super competitive sport compact $17-22k+ segment.

I don't know why everyone thinks it's exceptional in any way.

$19k? For a little haggling you can have a Civic Si for $17k (they sell cheap!) you get the same hp, less weight and a chassis that's completely different from the crap ordinary Civics, EP hatch chassis, the same as the Type R vs. Toyota's Avensis (basically a smaller Camry for Europe)

The Civic Si is lighter, has a better interior, shifter. Much bigger aftermarket and it's actually unique looking (love it or hate it) personally I like it's European influenced design. The hatch was designed to compete with VW Golf, so it has a solid Germanic feel when you shut the doors, like a vault. Very un-Honda like. Material quality is EXCELLENT. You get alacantra seats that are super comfortable. Trick ___ cool shifter AND it's a HATCHBACK. That means it's useful and practical, not limiting like a compact coupe.

There is tons of competition in this area and the tC has nothing to make it stand out at all.

There are several cars with more power, quite a few actually, right around that price, there's Subaru with the AWD Impreza RS, there are V6's.... you name it. There's the Neon SRT4, no Toyota for sure, but fast as ***** and will rape a tC.

So here's the tC. 1992 Toyota styling, but with the "hip" Scion badge. :?:

Where does it fit in between the Civic Si, Impreza and the rest?

What make it different exactly?

XM radio? You can get that with a Cavalier.

 

You know the Xa and Xb are only unique because these are the first of it's kind on our shores... I mean to each their own, owing anything above 2.0L is VERY VERY unique just about anywhere else in the world... 6 cylinder cars are pretty much luxury and 2.4 4 cyl is almost unheard of anywhere else on the planet... We sometimes take granted in that and not see the big picture...

As for the looks, the Xa and Xb are as played out as corollas in other countries... No one can afford even a corolla in Hong Kong (where I was born :D) and everyone drives a variant of a Xa or Xb car from every import company you can think of...

As for the tC... If one would judge not by the cover of the book, or in this case the sheet metal... They will see that for one, the tC will sport an all glass roof... How many cars on your left hand can you count that has this? (Even over seas I can only think of one other car or wagon in this case, the Mercedes something a ruther) Second of all, it'll have a very unique hatch that almost looks like a car that SHOULD have a trunk... Having dual sun roofs, built in visor, and turn signals in the mirrors (you would expect to pay about 40K and up for something like this) and not to mention 17" wheels... As for interior... Aluminum center console, with matching buttons and *****... Reclining back seats... (They do have that right? If so, then thats a first if I ever saw one.) Last but not least, 45 profile tires standard... Thats pretty hefty...

Well, I just listed a LOT of "features" and seriuosly this thread is more about the sheet metal... But for anyone who wants to spend 16K on some sheet metal, I guess these are the same people that judge all Porsche does 0-60 in 4 seconds, or all Hondas are slow... What I'm trying to say is, look beyond the sheet metal, save the dull factor till you see the car in person... Then after THAT, and you still feel that it is like any ol corolla, then feel free to purchase a Pontiac Aztec and make it a lowrider with pink tinted windows :D

Or unless till someone makes a car with 4 wheels that aren't at the corners... I would say that just about every car is looking pretty much to same to something else :D Or if Honda actually supported aftermarket body kits for their Civics, they would roll out about 300 unique cars soley by looks alone each day... I guess the tC is your equivlent to a glass bottom boat, to some it looks like just any other boat, but after you seen one yourself... You'll just go OoOoooOoooOOOoo!!!

P.S. Any car company without their Corollas would never have their Supras... Even though Scion is a badge under Toyota, it must make it's own money to earn creative freedom... And by all means, the tC si their meal ticket to making more ugfuglious cars to please the twelve (note that is a werid number like eleven) people that want to drive a square running into a cone that was stuck under a cylinder with two spheres trainling behind...
