Default Getting into Reverse in the mornings

In the morning on cold startups when i go to put the car in reverse, its like im hitting a reverse gear wall. Never had this issue with any other cars, it takes a good 2-3 times for it too actually lock in reverse.
I feel like this might be a common issue, I searched and didnt see any topics about this, just a few people commenting about it. I just want to see if this is an overall problem with scion 5-speed gears.

go to first and back to reverse, i think most of us have problems with getting into gears on cold start ups. you'll get used to it

Let off of the brake and let the car roll just a few inches then give it a try. This always works for me. Also take a look at this. https://www.scionlife.com/forums/vie...046&highlight=

yea happens all the time. You have to either shift into a forward gear, then into R, or double clutch into R.

I agree, it has been getting harder with the colder weather. I think that there have even been a few times where I've needed to double clutch and shift into forward gears to get it into R! It's pretty annoying.

The strange part is, techincally (I believe) you should always be able to get into R when the engine is off. Strangely, though, I can't seem to get into R when the car is cold at all with the engine off. I have to start it up to get it to go in... its sorta weird

i sometimes have to go back to neutral, let the clutch in and go back to reverse, but another weird thing is my brakes squeaking only on a cold start backing up. kinda bothers me, but i never hear it going forward from a cold start.

actually, the tC is 1 of the few cars that I havent had a problem with. But in other cars that have problems, I make sure the clutch is depressed all the way and put it into 4th then to reverse.

idk why it does it on cold starts, but generally its because reverse is a straight cut gear and has an idler gear that must also engage.

This is honestly pretty normal guys. It has to do with the way the gears line up in the transmission. Unfortunately I don't know the proper lingo, but I know the physics behind a transmission and the basic idea is that you're not putting the square in the square hole smoothly, so do something to line it up better. Either give it a little gas to spin the square, or put it into first and then back into reverse, or let the car roll a little, etc. Whatever rotates the square holes or the squares (I'm severely simplifying this, I realize that ).

There's a great little article on how things work dot com that explains transmissions and if you read up you should see exactly what I'm talking about.

usually i put my car into first, then to reverse. it helps with the reverse lock-out.

its not really the reverse lock out as much as it is just the fact that R is a different gear from every other gear and takes some convincing to get into

Yeah, there should be the choice "yes but this normal. I've seen this on every manual I've ever driven. It's just a matter of degree and frequency. When the above suggestions fail, try to go a couple of inches forward in 1st, stop and move it to reverse quickly. That always works for me.

No one I dont think has died yet from trying to put the car into reverse.

I usually find that with mine I have to have the clutch in about 80% to slide into gear.

Yeah, nobodys died from trying to put a car in reverse, but I don't believe anyone died from a shattering wind deflector and they had a recall. Or was it a Technical Service Bulletin? Don't get me wrong, I don't think our manual transmissions are defective, but I've been wrong before. My trans is fine.

i thought i was the only one but after it happened a few more times i started to realize this occurs at times. i'll keep that in mind next time it doesn't shift properly.
