Default help with buying tc please

help!!! i'm 19 and i am trying to buy this car. the thing is, i have no friends or family members who can help (most of them have been buying used cars all their lives).

i've been doing TONS of research and lots of talking with dealers.

I live in the philadelphia area, and i asked the guy how much TOTAL it would be for me to pay after taxes and fees and anything he could think of. This is what he told me :

7% tax, $55 dock fee, $5 tire tax, $68.50 new tags, $485 delivery fee.
MSRP - auto $16750 (does this sound right to you guys?)

here is a very silly question, would the tax be applied BEFORE the fees or AFTER all the fees?
if the tax is only applicable on the MSRP, i can definitely see the salesperson taking advantage of me and applying it after the fees.

if you have any other information for me, that would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!

i'm not sure about where u live, but i would assume tax would be after the fees since you can't buy the car without those fees. although i did buy an extended warranty and the bill of sale did not include the price of the warranty. so when i take the reciept in, it'll just show the sale price w/o the warranty. if you have questions, you can call your local DMV they can calculate actual tax for you. good luck and enjoy your new ride.

That sounds right. You can verify the price of the car and delivery fee at the scion.com website.

Usually sales tax is applied after all fees - the state likes to get all the money it can. Even if you technically weren't supposed to pay tax on the tags, doc and tire fee, the tax on those will be minimal (like $10). You'll always pay tax on the MSRP and the delivery fee.

In the end, you can have the dealer do the actual purchase order so you can see the actual final cost you'll pay - if you don't like it, don't sign it and you won't be under any obligation. (Just don't sign anything else until you see the purchase order.)

And when you see your loan agreement, you might freak out for a minute, because it will show you the total cost of the loan, including interest. It might be a surprise if you've never gotten a loan before. The good news is you won't pay tax on the interest.

Cost-wise, you've got it pretty good. Your tags are cheap in Philly - all the license stuff here in Seattle is $187. Sales tax is also around 9%, and auto dealers here even pass their B&O tax (their state income tax as a business) on to the buyer.

:D Michigan Example

MSRP-16465 (includes destination)
+160 (Documentation fee-So you dont go to the local Secretary of State/DMV)
=16625
X 6% Sales Tax w/c equals 997.50

16625
+997.50
=17622.50
+15 title
+plate-It depends on your Birthday in Michigan

No Charge on Tire Wax. Last I checked they are supposed to detail your car before delivery for free. Anyway good luck-With good income and maybe a little bit of mondey down-Scion should approve you-Under the Gen One program. I Hope you have OK credit-No credit is better that Bad Credit by the way. See a local dealer-who has high rating and reviews.

Good Luck

Wow, the doc fees are high in Michigan, eh? Must be a long drive to the DMV.

I think nizzle was referring to tire TAX - I think some states charge this to (supposedly) fund environmentally friendly disposal of tires. You would pay it if you buy aftermarket tires too.

I dont know about other states, but in PA the tax is calculated on the MSRP ONLY!! Also, most of PA is only 6% sales tax. Do yourself a favor and buy one outside of Philly and save a couple bucks. The doc fee sounds a little high too. I only charge $55 for the doc fee. Good luck!!

i think that regardless of where you buy, the sales tax is calculated in the state in which you register. For instance, I live in Ri and would love to drive up to NH and save several hundres dollars in sales tax. However, to register my car I have to go to RI (which is where I live) and pay sales tax there.

Anyone with a way arounf this? NH is only 2 hours away. Definatley worth $800 dollars.

I'm not the authority on this subject by any means, but the norm is that tax is applied to goods and not to services. ie., the car would be taxed as it it merchandise but the delivery fee wouldn't be taxed becuase it's a service.

I live in CA and that's the normal thing here.

Depends on how greedy your state government is.

Maybe PA should charge an extra 2% and take back the "privatized" PA turnpike...god that was a hideously decrepit highway last time I drove it.

to get a good rough estimate, just multiply the price by an extra 10%. That will be about covering tax + fees Including dmv, doc, Reg. and such. THats how i always broke it down real quickly for my customers when i sold cars. So you aren't gonna finance?
