Dang. Sorry about your car. I understand that the cables being hooked up wrong was probably the problem, but it still sucks to take a loss when you're trying to help someone out.

As others have said, the headlights didn't cause the problem. That seems like a silly suggestion.

Ouch, sorry to hear about your tC. The pics just make it all the more painful. Reversing the polarity can do bad things such as this. As can cheap jumper cables... if you get the kind that are too thin, they don't have enough capacity to carry as much juice as many cars/trucks need these days and will heat up (or simply not get enough juice to the car you're trying to jump).

Make sure you get good jumper cables, meaning nice thick, heavy duty ones that are CLEARLY marked so that you could tell even in raining darkness which is negative and which is positive.

Agreed. Cheap cables and incorectly connected. You're lucky the battery didn't explode.

Single OEM headlights can be had on ebay cheaply. As for the bumper they get them pre-painted see if you can get it from the parts dept then install it yourself . The lip you can get pre-primered from the dealer and have it painted elsewhere.

[quote="2azn4u"]To make a long story short..please see pictures.

I don't know what caused it...ya...maybe they were on wrong but still...it was really bad. When I had my Mustang, I used to put them on wrong sometimes and that has NEVER happened. Maybe it was because I was trying to jump a Tundra....

Basically, the body shop quoted me $1,200 to repair this.

DAMN chalk it up to human error..... I wouldnt even drive with it like that. call your insurance company .. ( I think i saw that kid with the roman candle ... ) if you know what i mean...

I already called insurance company. Its called comprehensive and my deductible is $1000 (I just raised it like last month to make my insurance cheaper and whaddyanno!)

So its not worth making a claim and making my insurance premiums increase

For $hit's sake - jumping a car CORRECTLY won't do that!
Come on folks - it sucks for him, but really, it was botched.
I've jump-started cars for about 30 years now and never had one single issue.

Black (-) goes to Black (-)
Red (+) goes to Red (+)

Put the red on first.
Then the black.

Well, a the risk of sounding like a fool, ill go with the saying "Better safe than sorry."

Whenever i jump start cars i have always done + to + then grounded the negative to a solid metal part on the car. Many newer cars like my moms denali and bmw have a spot somewhere in the engine bay close to the battery with a ground marking. In the denali its actually a metal piece connected to the block and the bmw has an oversize nut on the shock thing. So please correct me if this is the wrong way, but i always thought when you jump start a car you connect the negative to an alternate ground and not the battery.

Those are normally engine hooks and are fine for jumping.
Some say it's better.
May be.

Here is a great article on it with lots of good info:

id make your brother pay for the damages.. his fault for letting his battery die..

i had a fire in my last vehicle.. not from getting it jumped.. the alternator connector melted and the alternator overcharged itself and caught fire.. i fixed the problem with a new alternator.. but after that nothing was the same.. and it reeked of melting electrical..

sorry to hear of your loss.

first, learn that red goes to red, black goes to black. don't cheap out on electrical components. hand your brother, the tundra owner the bill for the body repair, and tell him to keep his own battery charged.
