Default At how many miles should you get your first oil change?

In my old jeep I changed the oil every 5k miles or around there, I used to beat on it alot, since this being my first new car, should I do the first oil change much sooner?

thanks

I'm planning to have the first of the three free ones done at 1K with dyno oil, run that 2K, then Castrol semi synthetic after that at 3K intervals...

yeah I actually went to the dealership tonight, and the mantenance guy said 3000 miles for oil change, and I also asked him about a "break in period" he said just drive the car and don't worry about it, lol, so long story short, I pulled 115 on the highway this evening, and it was sweet

Scion recommends 5000 miles. It's fine to do it then

There is no reason to get it changed more frequently than the maintenance schedule recommends, which is every 5,000 miles.

I did my first one at 3000 and will do the future ones at 5000 (which is on advice from the Scion manual and the NPR Car Talk guys). Kind of like using non-needed higher Octane. Just wasting your money.

However, if you are driving over 80% in dusty areas or doing most of driving in city/stop and go, I would do every 3000-4000 miles.

Of course places like Jiffy Lube and Pep Boys say 3000 as it is more $ in their pockets.

My guidelines are if the vehicle is driven mainly in the city, the oil is changed every 3k miles. If the vehicle is driven mainly on the highway, every 5k miles.

Unless you're driving in extremely dusty conditions, this is correct.

dust has nothing to do with the life of your oil...if your getting dust in your oil you have some MAJOR issues...hell...i dont even know how its phsically possible. Oil does break down over time due to shear forces within the engine. Driving in high temperatures and driving hard (putting alot of strain on engine/going up to redline alot) will decrease the life of the oil. It will be fine for our cars however to change the oil at the recommeded 5000 miles, with your first oil change being at around 1000 miles to flush out any bits of metal left over from the factory. If your using synthetic oils such as mobil one the life of the oil increases to about 8 or 9,000 miles. Also, synthetic isnt recommended for the first oil change.
