Default How many times you have gotten stuck in between gears?

Yeah...so I thought it was just me but my friend also just brought a tC and has been getting stuck in between gears bout once every week; which is about the same for me. (Mostly second gear) But since I got my shortshifter its been more like once every 3.5-4 weeks. So what I want to know is how about you guys?

PS - Please include how many years you driven manual, how long u have the tC for and if you got a shortshifter and etc. Thanks!

Eh... maybe 2 or 3 times since I've had my tC (almost 4 months). My very first car was manual. I only had it for a year though - then the last 7 years have been auto until I got my tC this year.

I've probably gotten stuck in gears maybe.. 3-4 times since i've had my tC, and I got it back in Sept of '04. First year driving a manual car if that helps. And i'll be installing a short shifter in a few days, so I'll let you know if i get stuck between gears even more often.

"Stuck" between gears? Driving manual for nine years, I'd have to say never, but that makes me think I don't think I know what you're talking about? Can you explain?

Like when your shifting gears but you let the clutch out too early so you're not really in gear and it makes a really loud noise.

I'm not used to a manual...I've had this problem, and also putting it in 3rd instead of 5th....what a klutz. Also learning NOT to ride the clutch, like I used to. I owned a manual for 6 years and sold it probably before you were born.....1986...had the xB for 2 weeks now. Opp's this was for TC owners...

How do you know when you are riding the clutch?

Jeez I guess thats nothing compared to me. I got it in feb. too and I did it once every week for 4-5 months. Which sums up to be around 20-25 times on estimate.

Not to mention when I have to drive fast I have a tendency to try to shift as fast as possible and thats when I also face this problem.

"riding the clutch" is when you rest your foot on the pedal while driving. This will partially depress the clutch and wear it out prematurely. Now, while stopped at a light, it really doesn't matter because the clutch wear occurs when clutching in and clutching off... Holding the clutch should be fine. But, the problem with that is if you get rear ended... The sudden jolt will alarm you and you will take your foot off the clutch, this engaging the gears and sending you forward (whether it is safe to go or not)... So for safety reasons, I say go to neutral!!!

So is it a normal thing even for someone who have a lot of experience driving manual?

I learned how to drive on a manual transmission and I've never grinded in my life. I noticed that I've grinded like 5 or 6 times only on 3rd gear since I've had the tc. I guess I've just been clumsy....but Iono

driven stick 1 year, 5 grinds total. one of them was putting it in first when I was rolling back from a reverse.

anyways, it's not normal to be grinding so much. I might understand it if you had a short shifter becuase it's easier to grind cause you might miss the gear, but it seems like you're grinding a lot even for your regular shifter. be sure to press the clutch pedel in all the way, shift and MAKE SURE YOU'RE IN GEAR, then let get of the cluctch pedel (while gassing of course). if you're still grinding, maybe you just gotta concentrate on your hand while you're shifting.

more importantly, it's recommended you leave your car in FIRST when you're at a stop. for the example above, if you were "rear ended," i'm assuming at a stoplight, you would either see the car in your rear view and drive to the side to miss it, or it'll hit you, you let go of the clutch, and your car will stop there. if you left it in neutral, you'd run right in the middle of the intersection and hit the other cars going left and right or they'd hit you. or say you were in traffic, it'd be better the guy rear ends you and your car stops there instead of running into the guy in front of you also and now you have two people to deal with...

I have posted this many many times, but i guess people don't see what I write?

it is the synchronizers on the transmission.. If they do not mesh with the input shaft at the correct speed, you get your missed shift and your grinding noise! Many people who have had the manual tC have had their transmissions replaced. This is not you or your shifting.. I know you're new to driving a manual, but this many times is a fault of the car, not you!

What is needed is a good dealer who doesn't make excuses because you're young and that actually believe what you have to tell them.. And they (if they are good) will listen and replace the transmission.. There seems to be a faulty design to this manual transmission.. I will get people who might defend the car.. I really don't care.. I test drove a couple last summer and found that all of them have transmission issues.. such as bad clutches, bad linkage, and bad syncronizers..

The celica from what I heard had the same issues.. 2000-2004 from what the dealer dept showed me.. they were constantly replacing bad manual transmissions..

sorry I can't be of better news, but to relieve your thinking you're not causing it.. sometimes someone MAY miss a shift, but not on a regular basis.. this is the transmission.. hopefully you guys read this...

Hmm that is nice to know that its not me...

If this continues constantly (once a month) to happen what parts of the car will be damaged?

well..? GUESS!

As far as grindation goes, i've learned how to drive stick on my tC and i haven't grinded any gears yet.

BTW if you still can't figure out what is damaged, it would be pretty much everything associated with the tranny. If some of the grinding comes from you trying to race...don't do that!

I grinded a few times racing due to lack of experience, almost never grind on regular driving, but i do grind when comming out of my driveway i let off the break coast alittle, then put it in reverse while still in motion.... thats about it, but a person grinds from reverse to first, i didnt think that can happen, im always drfting a bit when putting in first, and i dont grind although it rides the clutch alittle but no grindo

Its happened to me more than a few times, but only when Im turning left at a large intersection and shift into second midway through the turn. I have the clutch floored and it still grinds the **** out of second. Thats the only time its happened to me. I think it has to do with the tires rotating at different speeds through the turn. Anyone else have that problem?
