How stupid?
So tonight, me and two friends went to Home Depot to pick up some MDF for a homemade sub box, since the other friend who drove had a box already that was falling apart. He drives a 1997 Cougar. It's a boat.
Well, we see that Home Depot is closed. Well, as we are leaving, he gets a little too spirited when he goes to pull out, fishtails and ends up in a ditch on the other side of the road.
Well, me being the considerate friend I am, I whip out my tow hook, pop the panel on the front of my car, hook up a borrowed steel cable from one of the people closing Home Depot, an attach it to the hook, and his frame. I put it in reverse (I drive a 5 speed BTW) and gently give it the gas. I stall. So, I get the cable taught, then goose it. My RPMs shoot to 5000 with the clutch engaged, and I suddenly see the magic smoke that I have released from the transmission.
So, in frustration, I try again, but this time I roll at 1-2 mph and basically get a walk at it. This is what made my heart sink. It jerks hard, and my car is now rolling forward slightly. Enough trying.
I get out, and the fake air dam has popped out. That means that my bumper flexed, and the tow hook connects to the chassis/frame!
The point is, am I a f*cking moron? Because I feel like it...

ok, first of all...
it is called a tow hook because YOU can be towed by it
you are not supposed to tow somebody else with it...especially a car that is probably WAY heavier than yours...
sorry man, but that was kinda stupid

The correct way to get out of a ditch (assuming that all four wheels are on the ground, and you just can't get traction) is to use some wooden planks under the tires.

Oops... My bad... I was mixing up posts. Now it is me who is who is being retarded, LOL. But still, doesn't change my point. TC's are NOT set up for towing... Especially NOT from the front tow hitch.
Your 'friend' should of called a tow truck. It practically costs nothing if it's included in his car insurance. (If he even has car insurance.) I've bailed out many friends doing this and it was like $20-$25 a pop. Of course, they paid me back. It's much better than jackin' up your own car.
He eventually got the tow truck later. It was a matter of keeping this from his mom, who already _____es at him for his lead foot.
The only thing I did to my car was roast the clutch for 2 seconds max before I clutched in and felt my gut drop when I smelled clutch, and hurt the paint a bit on the little panel that covers the towing spot. The clutch still feels fine to me. But, lesson learned for sure.
