I remember in driving school that they say to never swerve to avoid hitting a dog, cat, deer, squirrels, bears, cows, birds, and elephants. You are putting you, your car, and other drivers in danger. You should just slow down as fast and steady as you can.

Highlander: I feel your pain, hope you get everything back good as new ASAP.
hit a cat, caltrans scrapes it up... hit a dog... it's a misdemeanor... at least last time I checked (here in California at least)... or maybe something like if you hit it and don't contact the owner... (I think that was it)
You know guys.. I have been through defensive driving here and I was tought the same thing, but at the time, your reactions are quicker than your mind is.
You will see for yourselves if, and I hope it doesnt, it ever happens to you...
Thank you guys alot, and I havent been able to go back to check on the parts of my car.. I will if they give them to me when I get the car back.. Right now I just want my baby back.

Had a similar thing happen. I didn't swerve, just braked. But too late. Killed someone's cat. But at least it was a sudden and painless death. Maybe a moment of panic but definately no suffering after the impact. I know I'd be distraught if it ever happened to our cat, and she's technically just a stray that we're looking after.
So, depending on how much guilt you carry around with you over things like this, you might be better off not having hit the dog.
Of course, if the tree had been more substantial, you might be writing us from the hospital...

Maximus is part of the hidplanet forums. where all us HID geeks reside and do crazy things with projectors in our headlights.
i would have hit the dog. but i'd try to avoid an elephant or a deer...cuz it'll probably die...but it might take you with him.
and you highlander!!
put your other wiper back on!!!

Actually, here in Virginia (where hunting deer within city limits is legal in some areas [Southwest VA]), I was taught to maintain speed or accelerate to minimize damage! Believe me, it's true...we hit a bear (yeah, a bear!) in my Tercel coming up through the mountains once (I-77). The Tercel was fine.
I love my dog as it is a part of the family. If you had swerved to miss mine, I would have volunteered to help pay for the damages. No joke. Sorry about your accident.

The airbags did not deploy, by the time I hit the tree I was only going about 20mph, if that. I will definately try to get you the bumber and the headlight and the fender... They are in bad shape though as you can tell...
I will talk to the body shop about it.
Thanks guys for your support.. I should get the car back within the week, and it is back to wasting gas.. Man I love to waste gas, oh... and DEFINATELY a bunch of pictures.. I have a very nice digital camera (Digi Rebel) and I love photo shoots. If there is anyone in the Augusta GA area that wants photos taken, let me know.
And I will also be moving to Dallas/Ft Worth area in about 3 months, so if you want some photo shoots there let me know.

I'll be the first to say, be glad ya swerved...the dog woulda messed up more expensive stuff under your car. Not only the bumper, but most likely the cross member, the oil pan, the....well just about everything under your car...since you said he was a big dog. I think overall it was most likely cheaper to get a fender, light, bumper, most likely other random shizzit I can't see. So good for you...you might have possibly saved yourself some money (just trying to make ya feel better)..hehe
I had to slam on the brakes the other day coming home from my friends to avoid an "apposum?" (dont know how to spell it) And I know how ____ed I was cuz I just stopped and it turned the other way all at the right time.. So I can/cant imagine how you felt/feel. But hope its like brand new when its done..
