Default I think my dealer may be pulling my leg

I just want to know what you all think here.....

I ordered my car on the 8th of September. bare bones stock SW 06 tC. I was told 6-8 weeks, no problem. I called the dealer about once every week to every other week just to check up on the status and to take care of some financing issues ( I just graduated college)

Well I was told that it came into port on October 10th. which was awesome. I talked to the dealer the next day and he told me that it would be in any day now and that they are just waiting for the truck to arrive. this all sounds great to me. given that I have been with out a car now for a month.

My question concerns the VIN #. I have asked the dealer numerous times if he was able to give me a VIN so that I could take care of the insurance. ( This was all through voice mail) He has not returned my calls to give me a VIN.

Should I be worried or concerned... or am I just being a fool?

Sorry for the rambling....Thanks in advance

Depends on when you asked him about it. He should have at least a partial VIN when they hit port. So he should have access to part of it if it's really coming. I would just keep asking him or stop by and see him if you can.

Dear concerned buyer,

Here in our region we can not view the vin numbers until the car is actually physically on a truck in transit. They just don't post that kind of information until it's on the way to our store. I wouldn't be concerned about it but keep following up as you are already.

You're probably alright, just be sure to remind your dealer that you need to know. Calling him every other day isn't unreasonable because you want the car and he should want the sale. However, he should have a VIN for you as soon as it gets on the truck. Otherwise there's no real way of knowing whether or not the vehicle exists.

The VIN is a big concern for me... When he told me that he was just waiting for the truck to arrive I assume that the car is in transit to the dealer and not in port, and this is why I am alittle worried.

If he would have said its in port and we are waiting for it to be loaded I wouldnt be so concerned. I just hope he isnt jerking me around. I wouldnt be real happy if he messed up the order or something else.

Well thank you all for the quick replies they have put me at some ease. I never thought I would get so worked up over a car, but this is my first

Thanks again

Some dealers are a bit shady, I think.

I ordered my tC on Sept. 19, and a couple of weeks later the dealer called me and told me it would be at the dealership on Oct. 17, which I was very happy to hear about. But just a couple days before the 17th, the dealer called me again saying that he 'read it wrong, and it should be there on the 26th instead', lol. That totally sounds like he just made that up. 17 and 26 dont even look alike =P. Anyway, I was okay with it, until he called me again a couple of minutes ago. He said that there was another NBM tC on the lot with just more features that I had ordered on it and asked me if I wanted that instead. I said no. (Maybe this isn't intentional, but it does seem like he held back on the car with the specifications that I wanted, and found any other one with the same color and more features so that he could take the chance hoping that I'd bite and buy it for a higher price, benefiting him, I guess?)

Anyway after all that, it's obvious that they don't really know what date the cars come in. So I asked him and he admitted to it. It's just annoying how he told me specific dates when he really had no clue of when they would be getting my car.

Yeah I would calm down a little. When we get cars coming in we dont know the VIN until its on the way. Even then we have to specifically ask the inventory manager to check the VIN for us. Its not on anything we all have access to. Well, Im the Scion manager so I get the VIN sheet everyday...

Allright then... I ordered mine and it is in the middle of the ocean making it's way here. My dealer had absolutely no problem getting the VIN for me and I already have insurance. My vehicle has not hit land yet. Food for thought...

Here in the southeast region. We get the vin# and estimated time it hits port from japan. Which is pretty close, unless there is a storm in the Gulf. Which usually pushes the date further out by several days. All my customers get their vin#s as soon as I see them coming in. (which is upto 3 weeks out)

Time to call the number in my sig.

If they won't release the vin, they may try to sell you a fully loaded tC regaurdless of what you asked for.

I had this happen to me three times before I finally called Scion. Bought my car a week after the phone call, exactly as I wanted it.

mine ported on the 8th (supposedly) and is in transit to the dealer, ETA 10/20 to 10/25.

these numbers may be complete B.S. but it's a good idea i suppose to see if the dealer has some form of VIN for you.

Thank you all for your replies, It seems that the info is all over the place, from some saying that the VIN# is difficult to come by to others who say that it is given to their customers right away. I will call my dealer tomorrow during my break and see whats going on. I called him Friday afternoon and left a voice mail asking about a VIN and no response and today again I left another voice mail asking about it at about 1:30 PM EST. and again no response. seerms like a shotty way to do business but we will see.

One more thing. when I went to trade in my car they had a 06 FM tC with more options then I wanted that they claimed to be a demo that they had just got in that day. I offered to purchase that one and they told me that I couldnt buy a demo because they must retain it for 4 months before they can sell it. I would have understood if they didnt have another demo but they did. They had a SW auto there as a demo and I know because thats the car I test drove.....Just seemed odd they they wouldnt want to make more money?

oh well...

Ill update tomorrow night

Thanks again

I don't know about you but here in Bakersfield the dealer gets shipments of cars every week. Once it hits port, they have access to Vin numbers. I got mine Vin number as soon as it hit port. I called and bugged my salesman everyday. I mean literally everyday for after 2 weeks of ordering because I wanted to deal with my insurance.

Now that is just pulling your leg. The only thing is that they are required to keep 1 car for demo purposes/test drive purposes on the lot. THey can not have all their cars sold. One has to be kept so taht they can offer test drives. Other than that I think its a go.

same thing happened to me, i had a deadline to get my vin so i could get my 1.9% finacning, and they did everything to get my vin#. i ended up getting it while the car was on the boat........but they had to estimate when i would actually take delivery of the car.
