I'm getting bad gas mileage with Scion tC
Hey all, i'm not getting good mileage with the tC. it's probably cuz i live in Berkeley, and its always stop and go driving.
but i was wonder: is there any advantage in using a higher octane rating when filling up your tank?
Scion tC takes octane number 87 which is regular gas. will mileage increase if i fill up with the more expensive gases?
thanks.

- How many miles do you have on your tC?
Maybe you have a dirty air filer already. Mine got dirty at 7,000 miles and now at 14,000 miles.
- Do you have aftermarket rims?
Different sized rims means your odometer could be off by a few miles.
- Did you check for a lower tire pressure? A lower/higher tire pressure makes a difference in fuel economy.
Hope I helped, let us know what it was.

If your in stop and go traffic, you'll be going through the gears a lot. What RPM do you shift at? Try a gas tank of not shifting past 3000-3500, and you'll see a major difference in gas. Also, be lineant on the gas. Going WOT (Wide open throttle, pedal to the floor) will drink your gas. If you've gotten your RPMs high, you may/probably have heard air getting sucked into your intake.. The car uses just as much gas to counteract it. You can imagine how bad it is for people with turbos. I had a guy who was getting his car worked on at the same time as me, and he was telling me when he goes WOT in his twin turbo 300 zx, you litterally watch the meter go down.

If you have checked all the obvious solutions such as low tire pressure, and your getting signifigantly lower gas mileage, look to your sensors. A failing O2 sensor can kill your gas mileage. That might be something you can look at on your own, or if your not comfortable, take it to the dealer.

...what was the posted mileage 28/31 m/t
27/30 a/t
well dont believe that...
in car and driver it was tested at 24...
which is really close because im at 23.5 mpg..
well its only breaking in and im sure itll increase
with time and breaking in the engine...
Just do what that guy said... keep your rpm's low...
but it sux if u live near a mayjor highway where you
have to go 0 to 60 in a matter of seconds or you get
beeped at and high beamed... ahh!!! crazy driver...

I get ~17mpg in real city driving- constant stop and go, etc. But, I get almost 30mpg on the highway. It's not an economy car; too much power, too big an engine, and too heavy to do well in stop and go driving. So enjoy the power and fill it up more. Unfortunately nothing's perfect.

I get around 25mpg. My mileage went up after the first 1000 miles or so. I don't know if I started driving different or if the engine just got broken in, but I get decent mileage now.
I am still babying mine at just 1000 miles and I am getting 26 MPG in a mix of freeway and city driving, including a bit of stop and go.
I have heard of one customer getting bad gas mileage because they kept the shifter in 3rd at all times. I didn't beleive it until I had mine for a while. It would not be that difficult to slip that shifter over that little notch.
Stupid, but a possibility.

First of all what gas mileage are you actually getting Slim? Just saying you get bad mileage isn't all that helpful. The easiest way to improve that mileage is to shift. I see many people who get on the freeway in stop and go traffic (10-40mph back and forth) and leave the car in 2nd gear the whole time. Try to keep the rpm down, shift to 3rd and 4th in traffic, when you can. Also, with the decent torque and short gearing you can accelerate quickly without ever going above 3500 rpm.
If you are still in the break-in period keep the rpm up and don't bog it down as that is much worse for the engine than over revving. Once you get above 1000 mi start shortshifting and keep the rpm down like I said.
I got 28.7 on my last tank in the city, which is pretty decent. I miss the 32-34 my RSX-S got, but at least you don't need premium in the Tc.

I drive an auto. Right now, with 4000 miles, I'm getting around 25~29 mpg with mixed highway and city driving. 87 octane gas is just fine and your gas mileage reflects how you drive and the surrounding traffic conditions.
I have to say that my 17mpg was with no highway or even extended city driving at all, pretty much all puttering around at slow speed or stopped in traffic. The setup of the tC just isn't good for those conditions. I have gotten 23-25 in mixed driving at other times. Still, it's no Corolla in mpg, that's for sure.
I get 24 mpg with the a/c on, mostly highway and a little stop and go. My 95 3.4 Firebird used to get 14-17mpg with the a/c on... big difference for me! ;) Plus, I fill once every 7-10 days, where as I used to fill my old car twice every 6-7 days... dang, 4bangers are cool!
:D wassup well im getting good mileage, also it depends on ur driving style if you have a light foot or a heavy one.. Racing aint gonna help also so might as well drive like grandma to get what your looking for .. but its all good due to the power who wouldnt have a heavy foot :D i know i do. :D
