Ive never bought a car, please give me tips.
I recently ordered a flint mica. I am not getting any options and im putting 2000 down,on a automatic. the total came out to $16,028. I put downa 500 dollar deposit. The dealer didn't mention anything about extended warranties or GAP to me. Im going to talk to him about that today, anything i need to know so i dont get screwed over? Im trying to finance with toyota because a credit union rejected me (i have a good credit score but unestablished credit). The dealer is going to send in the credit app today and will get back to me by tonight or wednesday.

I wouldn't buy an extended warranty for a toyota. only because of good product build, reliability, etc. If you want to , shop around, you can buy extended warranties from other companies besides the manuf. As far as GAP, definitaly get it. I would also shop around for that as well. Should only add maybe less than $20 per month to the payment. Will save you thousands if car is totaled. Look at deductible cost as that can vary.

Well, the *extended* warranty depends on how long you plan
on keeping the car. I plan on keeping my box for 5 years
even though I plan on paying it off in 3. So I went with the
6yr/100,000 mile warranty.
Since my payments were so low, I splurged and bought the
"Toyota Auto Care" pack which I think was $550. The
Care Pack is basically just oil changes and inspections
with a booklet to remind you when to come in. I calculated
it out and to do the oil myself for 5 years came out to $450
using regular 5W30 and common filters, or $700 for
Mobile1 and K&N oil filters for 5 years. It seemed worth it
to me to have Toyota do oil changes, plus they do coolant
flush and 19 point inspections and all that.
If you plan on getting nice wheels or lights or any of that,
don't get it through the dealership, buy it aftermarket and
install yourself if you can.
Moonroof or Sunroof I would have the dealership install
(mine is being done tomorrow) because it will then be under
warranty through them and they use Toyota approved
installers with the correct kits.
A couple of tips about payments;
An auto loan is simple interest, you are paying off that
interest early on in the payment program, not later. So it
doesn't do you any good to pay the car off early AT THE END
of the payments, you need to pay *extra* right away in
order to pay down the interest. (I hope that makes sense).
My payments are $328 a month, and I calculated my
interest is $3880 over 5 years. I'm going to make my first
few payments $1000, then taper off to $500 a month to get
the box paid off early. As I understand it, when paid this
way you actually get money back at the end of the loan
because you killed the interest right away.
Also, paying off the interest early helps you in case (god
forbid) you total the car. Because insurance is only going to
give you market value for your total. They don't cover the
extra that you owe in interest or custom wheels or hot
stereo or anything. That's where GAP comes in. If you don't
think you can pay ahead like I'm planning on doing, then
GAP is good because it covers you in the event of a total.
If you plan on paying the car off early, then GAP (hopefully)
is wasted money.
A car is a great way to make a good credit rating for yourself.
Just 1 year of solid, not a day late, payments gives you a
much better credit rating and looks good to other lenders.
I hope this helps out some. I've tranwrecked my credit
in the past and I'm using this as solid, reliable transportation
as well as a way to get my credit back on track. I've done
a ton of research and the Scion is a great option for first
time buyers and people just looking for a budget car with
a good amount of standard options!

Usually you are offered extended warranty, GAP coverage etc with a different person in the Finance Department when you sit down and sign all the final paperwork (my least favorite part of buying a car). Remember, you don't HAVE to get everything they offer you and they will try to sell you EVERYTHING because that's how they make money.
Get the GAP coverage. Do a search on here for GAP coverage and you'll find more info on it and see why it is important.
